As I said earlier, in the Province of Ontario insurers will insure trikes but only if they DO NOT have car motors or steering wheels. If you have a VW Powered Trike you are placed in the only category where the trike can be insured. They call it facility insurance. It costs about 3x normal rates and more if your younger. Regrettably I sold that VW trike because I refuse to pay the outrageous rates. But if it will help other builders in other Provinces and the States please peruse the following photo's
Bought this Kawasaki frame from a junkyard for $50. Sold the wheels/tires/swingarm/ rear fender & tailight for $60. That's the way I like to get started EH !!
Originally I was going to keep the rear body portion but as I started to take the remaining body off it was obvious that the metal was just about non-existent under the rear seat area so I elected at this point to go to the "open air" route. Bought this whole VW minus engine for $50. I later bought a reliable 1600 DP engine for $250.

These previous two photo's show how I grafted the front-end from the Kawasaki to 1 1/2" square tubing via through holes on the bottom then centered to the rear end. Added the top square tubes to the spine of the Kaw and welded to the VW axle. The top area was reinforced with 13 gauge sheet steel.
The sportster tank has been positioned but it is only the top shell. The bottom was cut away and I used this area for my fuse panel, flashers etc. I've postioned my diamond plate floorboards and you can see the framing for the seating arrangments. Also used a 5 gal. spun aluminum tank for gas. The shifter was moved back to where the original emergency brake lever was and the shift rod was shortened respectively. |
