The Holy Monastery of Simonos Petra or Simonopetra stands at a height of 330 meters on a rocky mountain. It was founded by the Blessed Simon the Myrrohovletes in 1257. In 1363 the monastery was renovated by a Serb Despot. In 1570 the Monastery was totally destroyed by fire and hundreds of documents of historical value were burnt. The intolerable taxes of the Turks drove Simonopetra to decline and abandonment. The Monastery contains documents in greek, turkish and rumanian language. Also icons, vestments, silverware, seals and engravings.
