G G C G C C Em D
She says it's been so long, she can't remember when
G G C G C C D G
The mention of his name didn't make her feel again
G G C G C C Em D
That everything is possible and every day a brand new start
G G C G C C D G
Yeah, love's something powerful when it finds a willing heart
Bm Bm C C

[instrumental]
There is someone in his past that he hasn't gotten over yet
Each day's like the last, he just misses what he can't forget
It's just an empty space where something used to be
Now he guards the gate, but he's lost the key
So no one enters, but no one leaves
There's a keeper for every flame

[instrumental]
G G C G C C D G
[instrumental]
Thought my heart had broken, but it was just a little bruised
I thought love had spoken, I guess I was just confused
Sometimes we were a fire burning out of control
Sometimes we were nothing but a candle glow
But it never died, baby, how I know
There's a keeper for every flame

A Lot Like Me
[Actually in F; capo 5, I think. Each chord is one measure, except two
chords joined by a hyphen (e.g., "F - G") are one measure _total_.]
C C F F G G C G C C F F G G C G
[intro]
C C F F
He was a long tall stranger from way down south where he'd left his life behind
Dm G C G
He had a big old Gibson and a pickup truck and Shenandoah eyes
C Em F F
And I remember him sitting in that local bar where I earned my pay each night
Dm G F - G C G
Singing my songs to empty chairs and going home half tight
C C F F
So the nights rolled by like headlights shining on a lonesome strip of tar
Dm G C G
I kept his words of kindness close to me like a pick on my guitar; And we
C Em F F
Talked about the singers and the songs we loved and the songs we'd most forgot
Dm G F - G C
In that run-down bar they'd make last call and I'd never want to stop
F G
'Cause I was living on nothing but a young girl's dreams
C - Em F
With my cowboy boots and my old six-string
Dm G C - Em F
Hitching my wagon to a star, dreaming of leaving those local bars
C Em/B Am - G F
When I'd get him up at closing time for a couple of songs and a chance to shine
Dm G F - G
Like the star that he longed to be, he looked a helluva lot like me
C C F F G G C G
(me) [instrumental]
He'd played a lot of places where the only wages were food and beer for free
No fancy licks, but he had him a gift for the kind of songs he'd sing
But you do what you can to be a satisfied man, just to have your peace of mind
So he gave it all up for a government job where the paychecks come on time
So now he comes to the bar to hear me play guitar and to share a drink or two
And we sit swapping tales of where we've been and what we'd rather do
There's a wealth of danger when you're talking to strangers, and I meet them
all the time
But my heart knew better than my head when I looked into those eyes
'Cause I was living on nothing but a young girl's dreams with my cowboy boots
and my old six-string
Hitching my wagon to a star, dreaming of leaving those local bars
When I'd get him up at closing time for a couple of songs and a chance to shine
Like the star that he longed to be, he looked a hell of a lot like me
C C F F G G C G C Em F F Dm G F-G C
[violin solo] [harmonica solo]
Well, maybe I'll quit when I got me a kid and a place to call my own
But tonight there ain't nobody there waiting up for me at home
It's a hell of a way to live from day to day not knowing where you're bound
But the look in his eyes made me realize I was glad for the life I'd found
'Cause I was living on nothing but a young girl's dreams with my cowboy boots
and my old six-string
Hitching my wagon to a star, dreaming of leaving those local bars
When I'd get him up at closing time for a couple of songs and a chance to shine
Dm G F - G Am
Like the star that he longed to be, he looked a hell of a lot like me
Dm G F - G
Like the star that he'd always be, he looked a hell of a lot like me
C C F F G G C C.

Laying rubber and spewing rust

Underneath the smooth tar curves

Em Em D D

G G D D C C Em/B Em/B
A road is just a road that the one you love is leaving on
C C Em/B Em/B D D G G G G
And midnight's another dawn, 100 miles ago [these two G's are only
played the first time.]
His wheels spun out of sight of me
Believing that I'd set him free
But I'd heard the voice of the prisoner
Saying he couldn't get enough of her
You go by land, you go by air
You go by sea, hell I don't care
You can go any way you choose
Wearing out the soles of your traveling shoes
And a road is just a road and a feeling's just a feeling
No matter where you go, from Bangor, Maine to Bakersfield
A road is just a road that the one you love is leaving on
And midnight's another dawn, a hundred miles ago
[Guitar solo: same chords as chorus.]
F F C C
And every sleepless night I see him
G G C C C C
Screaming by the scenery
F F C C
Not noticing another mile
G G C C C C D D D D
That's rolled down between him and me
'Cause a road is just a road and a feeling's just a feeling
No matter where you go, from Saskatoon to San Antone
A road is just a road that the one you love is leaving on
And midnight's another dawn, a hundred miles ago
Yes, a road is just a road and a feeling's just a feeling
No matter where you go, from San Bernardino to Sault Ste. Marie
A road is just a road that the one you love is leaving on
And midnight's another dawn, a hundred miles ago

Come On Come On
[I've written this tablature as if all six strings were played on every
chord, but that isn't really accurate. I only wrote out the tab to show
the rhythm and fingerings.]
[Every strum notated here is a downstroke with the thumb (no pick, no
fingernails). There are a few upstrokes in between the downstrokes, but
I haven't shown those.]
[Some possible names for the chords are at the end of the file. I didn't
put chord names about the tab because it would just be confusing. Oh,
and the lyrics aren't lined up with the rhythm...sorry.]
[Actually in Bb; capo 3.]
[Tuning: DADF#GD (yes, tune your B string down to G).]

It's a photograph taken in Paris, at the end of the honeymoon
In 1948, late in the month of June
Your parents smile for the camera in sienna shades of light
Now you're older than they were then that summer night

Come on come on, you just have to whisper; Come on come on, I will understand

It's a loss you never get over the first time you lose
[instrumental solo: same chords as the chorus, except the last measure is 000020
throughout (no 020100-020000). See tablature below for the lead guitar part.]
And tonight I am thinking of someone, seventeen years ago
We rode in his daddy's car down the river [skip two measures]
(road) Come on come on, it's getting late now; Come on come on, take my hand
Come on come on, you just have to whisper; Come on come on, I will understand
Come on come on, it's getting late now; Come on come on, take my hand
Come on come on, you just have to whisper; Come on come on, I will understand
Come on come on
[instrumental ending: same chords as chorus, but end on G (020100). Again, tab
for the lead guitar part is at the end of the file.]
CHORDS:
020100 = G/D 030100 = C(9)/D 000020 = D
777600 = Am7(4) 999800 = Gmaj7/B 450300 = D(4)/F#
020000 = Gmaj7/D 230000 = C(9)addF#/E 230100 = C(9)/E
222000 = Em9 [yuck!]
LEAD GUITAR:
In the recorded version of this song, the piano kind of dominates the
guitar, especially in the solo. However, the version that I've transcribed
here is from a 1993 tape of "Austin City Limits", because John Jennings'
lead guitar part is more interesting on "ACL" than on the album. And since
I have both video and audio for this song, it's probably the first time
I'm 100% sure that I've got the fingerings right!
Jennings' guitar, like MCC's, has a capo on the third fret, but his is in
standard tuning. The chord names above the tab are rough guides, since
the real chords have horrible names.
The slashes are slides up (/) and down (\), and the equal signs (=) are
pull-offs. Obviously, the "02," "242," and "353" sequences are hammer-ons
and pull-offs. "Triplet" or "tri" denote triplets. In the beginning of
each phrase (the part that sounds like "come on come on," put some vibrato
on the 3rd fret of the B string. Arpeggiate the triple stops (places where
you play three strings at once).

You wave your hand and they scatter like crows
They have nothing that will ever capture your heart

Oh, be careful of them in the dark
And if I was the one
You chose to be your only one
Oh baby now, can't you hear me now

Will I see you tonight on a downtown train

Where every night is just the same; You leave me lonely now

I know your stairs and your doorway
I walk down your street and past your gate
I stand by the light at the fourway
You watch them as they fall
Ooh, and they all have heart attacks
They stay at the carnival, but they'll never win you back
Will I see you tonight on a downtown train
Where every night, every night is just the same; you leave me lonely

Family Hands
[Recorded in F. Mary Chapin plays in dropped-D tuning (DADGBE) in the key
of D, with a capo on the 3rd fret. John Jennings plays the lead part in
C with a capo on the 5th fret (and standard tuning).]
[All the verses aren't _exactly_ the same, but they're close enough
that I only wrote tablature for the first verse.]
[I wasn't able to write tablature for the rhythm guitar during the lead
guitar solos, because the lead guitar gets in the way. But I _have_
written down the exact chord shapes she uses.]

Girls With Guitars
[These chords are from Wynonna Judd's recorded version; the version that
Mary Chapin Carpenter does in concert is almost identical, except MCC
plays these chords with a capo on the third fret, raising it to G.]
[Each chord represents two beats, or half of a measure.]
[Play most of the chords with a typical rock 'n' roll feel, with sixths
on the offbeats (see tab at end of file). Play sevenths if you want.]

LYRICS:
Every night she sleeps alone
And by her bed she puts the phone
And every morning after that
She takes the phone and puts it back
He's got a wife back home and three kids up and grown
But these are things that go unsaid
He might call her from the road just in time to say hello
And goodbye again
She keeps his picture tucked away
She thinks she'll have it framed one day
And maybe he'll come see it there
Hanging by her rocking chair
In a corner of her room on a Sunday afternoon
When all the world is dull and gray
She might close her eyes and sit, rocking gently for a bit
Till all the bad thoughts go away
[piano solo: A/E A/E E7sus E7sus A/E A/E D(9) D(9) ]
[ A/E A/E E7sus E7sus D(9) D(9) D(9) D(9) ]
Back when children played their games
London Bridge and Jesse James
She captured flags, she bounced the ball
And every time, she beat them all
And now she comes home to a cat in a three-room walk-up flat
And plays a game of solitaire
Well she made a fist last night, and she broke the hallway light
And the pieces scattered everywhere
You see, he's got a wife back home and three kids up and grown
But these are things that go unsaid
He might call her from the road just in time to say hello
And goodbye again
[End on D(9).]

Now back then Jackson was a real small town
And it's not every night a comet comes around
It was almost eighty years since its last time through
So I bet your mother would've said "amen" too
As its tail stretched out like a stardust streak
The papers wrote about it every day for a week
They wondered where it's going and where it's been

Well I strolled down to the corner, gave my numbers to the clerk
The pot's eleven million so I called in sick to work
I bought a pack of Camels, a burrito and a Barq's
Crossed against the light, made a beeline for the park
The sky began to thunder, wind began to moan
I heard a voice above me saying, "girl, you better get back home"
But I feel lucky, oh oh oh, I feel lucky, yeah
No tropical depression gonna steal my sun away

Well I know it ain't been roses lately, baby, it's just been thorns
And no matter what we do, nothing seems to change
Love has always been my shelter, for you it's been a storm
But for a while I thought we'd almost beat the rain
Now there's a hole here in my pocket where all my dreams have gone
Fallen out like so many nickels and dimes
And last of all you, you'd always been my good luck charm
I should've known that luck's a waste of time
'Cause it don't bring you love if you don't love
And it don't bring you time if you ain't got time
And it don't bring you strength, baby, if you ain't strong
And it don't bring you kindness if you ain't kind
Now there's a whole lot of life to be unsure of
But there's one thing I can safely say I know
That of all the things that finally desert us
Pride is always the last thing to go
But it won't bring you love if you don't love
And it won't bring you time if you ain't got time
And it won't bring you strength, baby, if you ain't strong
And it won't bring you kindness if you ain't kind

And now I wish you only roses, baby, without the thorns
And I hope your dreams are always within reach
And I wish you shelter, baby, from all your storms
They scared you, but they never seemed to teach
That I can't bring you love if you don't love
And I can't bring you time if you ain't got time
And I can't bring you strength, baby, if you ain't strong

John Doe No. 24
This song is in the key of E, but Mary Chapin plays it in G with a
capo at the 9th fret, in open D tuning (DADF#AD). But the highest
string is never used, so you don't have to tune that one down; since
high E's often break, you may as well tune to DADF#AE.
The guitar part repeats one pattern through the entire song, with some
slight variations. This tablature is for the first four measures of
the intro, and it shows two ways to play the end of the pattern; through
most of the song, she uses the second way, especially while she's
singing. (Note that the "131" in the tab is a hammer-on followed by a
pull-off, and the "13" is a hammer-on from 1 to 3, not thirteen!

I'm not sure exactly which fingers she uses; she might use her thumb
to fret the low E. (If anyone finds out, let me know.) Notice that
I didn't put chord names; that's because they don't really matter.
I guess you could say the chords are: G(9), C(9)/E, C(9)/D, D(4).
LYRICS (each line is two measures):
I was standing on the sidewalk in 1945
In Jacksonville, Illinois
When asked what my name was there came no reply
They said I was a deaf and sightless half-wit boy
But Louis was my name, though I could not say it
I was born and raised in New Orleans
My spirit was wild, so I let the river take it
On a barge and a prayer upstream
Well they searched for a mother and they searched for a father
And they searched till they searched no more
The doctors put to rest their scientific tests
And they named me "John Doe No. 24"
And they all shook their heads in pity
For a world so silent and dark
Well there's no doubt that life's a mystery
But so too is the human heart
And it was my heart's own perfume when the crepe jasmine bloomed
On Rue Morgue Avenue
Though I couldn't hear the bells of the streetcars coming
By toeing the track I knew
And if I were an old man returning
With my satchel and porkpie hat
I'd hit every jazz joint on Bourbon
And I'd hit everyone on Basin after that
[sixteen-bar saxophone solo]
The years kept passing as they passed me around
From one state ward to another
Like I was an orphan shoe from the lost and found
Always missing the other
And they gave me a harp last Christmas
And all the nurses took a dance
But lately I've been growing listless
I've been dreaming again of the past
I'm wandering down to the banks of the great Big Muddy
Where the shotgun houses stand
I am seven years old and I feel my dad
Reach out for my hand
While I drew breath no one missed me
So they won't on the day that I cease
Put a sprig of crepe jasmine with me
To remind me of New Orleans
I was standing on the sidewalk in 1945
In Jacksonville, Illinois
[pause on A note (open 2nd string)]
[repeat and fade with saxophone solo]

Passionate Kisses
* Lucinda Williams' recording of this song is in E, so you'd have to put
a capo at the fourth fret to match the recording if you use these chords.
* Mary-Chapin Carpenter's recording is in D, and I know she plays it in
C with a capo at the second fret.
* In the instrumental bits, I put bar lines (|) to separate measures;
everywhere else in the song, one chord is one measure.
* The rhythm guitar doesn't actually play all those chords in the intro,
but it sounds neat.
* Mix up some (9)'s with the C's and F's.

Someone met John Jenning's (MCC's guitarist) after a concert and asked
him how he plays this song in concert; he wrote it down in standard musical
notation, and I converted it to tablature. (But there's no guarantee that
this is where John Jennings puts his fingers.) The ">" marks are accents.

Quittin' Time
Okay, a couple notes about this song. First, I _suspect_ (but I don't
know for sure) that the electric guitar plays this song in D, and that
Mary-Chapin plays the acoustic guitar in C, capoed up two frets (as I've
written it here). (The recording _is_ in D.)
Don't worry too much about the bass notes in the chorus; they were just
so obvious I had to put them in.
The little riff at the end of the C Fmaj7 G G lines (after "tell me what
we're gonna do") is just Gsus4-Gsus4-G, Gsus4-Gsus4-G. Finger G as 320003,
and use your index finger to do the first fret on the B string. (Of course,
it's Asus4-Asus4-A if you play it in D.)
Each chord is half a measure. Capo 2.

these are the _exact_ fingerings that Jennings uses, but they work.]

[Each chord is half a measure, except chords joined by a hyphen
(e.g., C - G/B) are a half measure total.]
[I'm not quite sure about some of these chords, especially the Am7/G,
which I play as 302013. And the C might be C(9) (x32030). Also, some
of the other chords have non-root bass notes, like D/A or C/E, but I'm
not going to try to figure out which ones.]

And then a voice called to us to make our way back home
When I was ten, my father held me on his shoulders above the crowd
To see a train draped in mourning pass slowly through our town
His widow kneeled with all their children at the sacred burial ground
And the TV glowed that long hot summer with all the cities burning down
And the stones in the road flew out beneath our bicycle tires
Worlds removed from all those fires as we raced each other home

The starving children have been replaced by souls out on the street
We give a dollar when we pass, and hope our eyes don't meet

We kiss your ass, we make you hold, we doctor the receipt
And the stones in the road fly out from beneath our wheels
Another day, another deal, before we get back home
And the stones in the road leave a mark from whence they came

The Last Word
[This song is weird. It's in Eb, but the electric guitar in the intro
is playing what sound like open strings. I think that the electric is
tuned down a half step. I suspect that Mary Chapin plays it in C with
a capo on the 3rd fret, or in D with a capo at the first fret, which is
how I've written it here.]

This shirt was the place your cat decided to give birth to five
And we stayed up all night watching, and we wept when the last one died

Walking Through The Fire
[This song is actually in the key of A, then it switches to B; I'm guessing
that Mary Chapin plays it in G & A with a capo on the second fret.]
[On a single guitar, you can do a pretty good rendition of the descending
pattern in C(9)-D by playing C(9) as x30010 and then changing to x30000
right before the D. For D(9) (in the latter part of the song), play it
as xx0230, and then xx0220 right before the E.]

When She's Gone
[Actually in F; capo 5.]
[The lines that are just F and C actually have some F(9)'s and C(9)'s in
them; that's all spelled out at the end.]

She looked around and shook her head
F C
There's really nothing left, she said
G C
There's nothing I ain't done

F C F C F C G C
[instrumental]
Morning comes on an old cat's paws
And when the sun hits the walls
The light's as bright as it ever was
After or before
And you wince as waking pounds your head
And you drag your arm across the bed
And the tangled sheets and the twisted spread
Fall onto the floor
And the kitchen table finds you silent
If you had a thought, now you can't find it
You take a long drag on your smoke
And taste your coffee growing cold
She didn't beg and you didn't plead
She knew exactly how to leave
The way she knew when you kissed her
When she's gone, you won't miss her
She didn't beg and you didn't plead
She knew exactly when to leave
The way she knew as you kissed her
When she's gone, you won't miss her
F C F C F C G C
[Instrumental; repeat and fade]
Here's the strumming pattern for most of the song. The funny-looking
lines are musical notes. The numbers above the notes are just the relative
durations, for the benefit of the notationally impaired.
The first chord of each line is actually just a single note, or perhaps
just the two or three lowest strings. The last C(9) in the first two lines
is only played sometimes; other times, it's just an eighth note at the end
of the measure, and other times there's _no_ chord after the C*.
F: x33211 or 133211 (fret the E string with your thumb)
F(9): x33011 or 133011 (fret the E string with your thumb)
C(9): 330010
C*: hammer-on (quickly) from 330010 to 332010
C: 332010
G: 320003
Am: x02210

Why Walk When You Can Fly
[I've no idea how Mary Chapin Carpenter plays this song. In concert, it
looked like she was playing with a capo on the 7th fret. Since the song
is in B, that would mean she was playing the chords in E. The only way I
can picture that is if she was using chords like x46600 for C#m, a la "The
End of My Pirate Days." I do know for sure that she wasn't using nice,
normal chords. Maybe her capo was at 6 or 9, or maybe she had her guitar
tuned funny. If anyone finds out, please let me know.]
[I'm going to write these chords down in the key of G, since I know that's
where John Jennings played them, with a capo on the 4th fret.]

You Win Again
I see this song is already in the archive, but it's missing those really
cool solos! Back when I was still taking guitar lessons my teacher,
Chris Jackson, figured this out and it's so much fun to play once you
get the hang of it. Hope you enjoy!
Special Notes:
1) When I tab something like 9(10), that means to bend the string so
that it sounds as though you're playing in the tenth fret on that string
2) When I show a 9(10)(9), the (9) means to bend the string back down
to it's original position, but not to pick the note
3) And one thing I'm not sure exactly on how to best show on here is
when you bend up 9(10) and then you want to pick that note while it's
still bent, and for my purposes I use an * to show that. If you have
any better ideas, let me know.
