TIME'S CRUCIBLE:
A HISTORY OF THE OMNIVERSE

INTRODUCTION

I. How This Madness All Started (Besides Insomnia, Boredom, and Insanity)

This site had many inspirations. First was my love of history. Second was my love for science-fiction and fantasy. The third and most important was the various attempts by various fans of various series and characters to reconcile the different time-lines and realities presented by two or more such series, particularly in the context of cross-over fan fiction. The two most common subjects seem to be Doctor Who and the many Star Trek series. Because Doctor Who is my favorite, I decided to use its timeline as the backbone for my history, with Star Trek as secondary. Lance Parkins' A History of the Universe proved invaluable, as did the Okudas' Star Trek History of the Future. I decided to go one further, though, by including stories from  books and episodes which these two authors have not gotten around to yet in their updates, as well as including births, deaths, and other important factoids from the lives of real historical figures mentioned or encountered in both series. Significant events from real history were also added to give some perspective. I also included some events which they left out, and left out some events that they included. (See the "Sources" page for more info.) Unfortunately, once I get something started, I often don't know when to stop.

As the germ of the idea for this site grew, I thought, "Why stop at just those two?" Both series have time travel in them, and time travel was inspired by H.G. Wells's The Time Machine. How about including events from George Pal's film treatment of the story? Doctor Who has stories in the original series and the novels about vampires; why not include the history of those greatest of all creatures of the night, Anne Rice's Vampires? And if you're going to have Who, why not the Hitchiker's series, and it went on and on from there.

II. What's Included

Here then, is what you will see entered into the history. Doctor Who (original series, Virgin and BBC book novels, Target originals), Star Trek (series and films), Star Wars, Highlander, Quatum Leap, Back to the Future,  The Time Machine (George Pal film), The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, Time Bandits, The Vampire Chronicles, The Mayfair Witches, Anne Rice's The Mummy, Servant of the Bones, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Lost In Space (the so-bad-its-good series, not the just-plan-bad movie), The X-Files, the Oz books, the Marvel Comics Universe, the DC Comics Universe.
(NOTE: Just because something is listed here doesn't mean everything in it is included. Doctor Who forms the backbone of the history and gets precedence. Most events in the others are all set in a single year or even week and would make for too many entries. The Doctor's account of events also takes precedence when reconciling two or more conflicting versions of the same historical event - like the JFK assassination.)

III. What's Not Included

None of these are bad, IMO; I just couldn't figure out how to reconcile them with the timelines set by the others: Babylon 5, Xena, Hercules, Space: 1999, Earth: Final Conflict, Independence Day, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, The Time Tunnel, Time Trax.

IV. What Might be Included in the Future

J.R.R. Tolkien, The Chronicles of Narnia, Isaac Asimov's Foundation Series, Battlestar Galactica, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Men In Black, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Riverworld, Stargate SG-1.

V. When Will It Be Finished?

When it is done. Which is probably never. The site is incomplete and a perpetual work in progress. Check back often. You never know what you'll find.
