1934 - G.A. Richards purchased the Portsmouth, OH Spartans, for less than $8,000 and renamed it the Detroit Lions.
1948 - First night baseball game in
Detroit the Detroit Tigers beat the Philadelphia Athletics at Briggs Stadium.


1950 -
Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
1952 -
Detroit Lions win the NFL championship by beating the Cleveland Browns 17-7.
1952 -
Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
1953 -
Detroit Lions win the NFL championship by beating the Cleveland Browns 17-16.
1954 -
Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
1955 -
Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
1957 -
Detroit Lions win the NFL championship by beating the Cleveland Browns 59-14.
1957 -
Detroit Pistons move to Detroit changing their name from the Fort Wayne Pistons.
1958 -
Ozzie Virgil, the first Black player on the Detroit Tigers, played his first home game.


1961 -
Detroit Pistons move to Cobo Arena in downtown Detroit for their home games.
1961 -
Briggs Stadium renamed Tiger Stadium.
1961 -
Norm Cash, iagainst the Washington Senators, became the first Detroit Tiger to hit a ball out of Tiger Stadium.
1964 -
Detroit Lions purchased by William Clay Ford for $4.5 million.
1968 -
Detroit Tigers win the World Series by beating  the St. Louis Cardinals.


1975 -
Detroit Lions leave Tiger Stadium and move to the Pontiac Silverdome.
1978 -
Detroit Pistons leave Cobo Arena and move to the Pontiac Silverdome.
1979 -
Detroit Red Wings move from Olympia Stadium to Joe Louis Arena.


1982 -
Detroit Red Wings purchased by Mike and Marian Ilitch, who own Little Caesars Pizza.
1983 -
Detroit Lions win the NFC Central Title. (Lions have won three championships; 1952, 1953, 1957....no superbowls)
1984 -
Detroit Tigers sold by John Fetzer to Tom Monoghan who owns Dominos Pizza.
1984 -
Detroit Tigers win the World Series by beating the San Diego Padres.
1988 -
Detroit Pistons leave the Pontiac Silverdome and move to the Palace of Auburn Hills.
1989 -
Detroit Pistons win the 1988-1989 NBA Championship.


1990 -
Detroit Pistons win the 1989-1990 NBA Championship.
1992 -
Detroit Tigers purchased by Mike Ilitch, who own Little Caesars Pizza.
1997 -
Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
1998 -
Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup.
1999 -
Detroit Tigers leave Tiger Stadium (September 27, 1999, a sad and momentous day for all Tiger fans.

          Detroit Tiger played the last game at "The Corner" after 87 years and 6,783 games.
2000 -
Detroit Tigers play first game at Comerica Park.
2001 -
Detroit Lions play last game at Pontiac Silver Dome.
2002 -
Detroit Red Wings win 10th Stanley Cup.

2002 -
Detroit Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman retires after the team won the Stanley Cup for a third time in six years.

Detroit Lions play first game (preseason)  at Ford Field, lose to Pittsburgh Steelers 34-22 in exhibition game.
2004 -
Detroit Pistons
defeat the L.A. Lakers on June 15 by 100-87 and win the NBA championship in five games

2006 - Detroit Tigers win the American League Championship.

2008 - Detroit Red Wings win 11th Stanley Cup

          (Previous wins: 1935-36; 1936-37; 1942-43; 1949-50; 1951-52; 1953-54; 1954-55; 1996-97; 1997-98, 2001-02.

 

2008 - Tiger Stadium demolition begins.

2008 - Detroit Tigers finish in last place.

2008 - Detroit Lions finish in last place and become the first NFL team to go 0-16 in a regular season.


Lions lose to the Green Bay Packers 37-31 in their inaugural game at Ford Field on September 22, 2002

2009 - Detroit Red Wings fail in their Stanley Cup bid, losing the series in seven games.

2009 - Tiger Stadium demolition is completed.

2009 - Detroit Tigers blow one game playoff and lose the divisional championship to the Twins.

2009 - Detroit Shock announce that they are moving the team to Tulsa, OK.
