At around 1:30am a gasoline tanker traveling north on I-94 tried to exit onto
westbound Rt. 132 heading to Round Lake Beach when the truck flipped on its side and slid onto Rt 132, tearing large holes into the tank. Up to 7000 gallons of fuel spilled onto the highway. The Gurnee Fire Department responded and quickly pulled a Haz-Mat MABAS Box Alarm. A special alarm for Tankers was also activated. The Gurnee FD secured the scene and a private haz-mat response team was called to the scene that specializes in fuel spills & clean-up. Once the team arrived they performed the dangerous job of drilling holes into the side of the tanker so the remaining fuel could be removed. During this process the Gurnee & Grayslake FD applied foam to the entire area. The truck was then uprighted and the roadway was cleared about 2:30pm. Tankers reponded from Round Lake, Lake Villa, Antioch & Newport FPD. Grayslake also responded with an Engine and Newport with a Foam truck. The Lake Villa Rescue Squad provided change of quarters to Gurnee and responded to several rescue calls during the clean up. |
