The Belfast mother of a murdered Irish Republican, who charges that the Provisional IRA killed her son, has arrived in New York to appeal for American backing for an independent inquiry.

Margaret O’Connor, whose son Joseph was murdered outside her Belfast home on October 15, will appear on WBAI 99.5 FM Radio Eireann tomorrow Saturday November 4, at 1:30 PM, as the first stop in a week long tour that will include meetings with Irish activists and human rights groups.

Mrs. O’Connor is appealing for an independent human rights inquiry into the murder and believes that the American pressure could be crucial. Her visit will coincide with one by Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams.

The following statement is issued by Joe Dillon on behalf of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement:

“The intimidation of members of the O’Connor family, by those involved in the cover-up of Joe O’Connor’s murder, further exposes the extremes those people are prepared to go to silence the truth.

The orchestrated pickets on the homes of Republicans who voiced their opposition to the murder, further demonstrates the “Stalinist” tactics being employed in Nationalist/Republican areas at the behest of the Provisional leadership.

There is no doubt, that these activities are inspired by pro-British elements that are endeavouring to eliminate Republican opposition to the Stormont Deal. It is apparent that these actions are part of a concerted effort, intended to shore-up David Trimble at this crucial time.

Republicans will not be silenced nor deterred in their opposition to British rule.”
