Understanding the Godhead

The Godhead is a doctrine that few have taken the time to investigate what God's holy word says about this subject. Theologians and ministers alike have many excuses for their lack of knowledge of the Godhead. The vast majority blame God for their ignorance by saying things like, "The Godhead is a mystery that we cannot fully understand on this side of eternity." Many sincere and well meaning believers have been taught that they will never be able to fully understand the Godhead, and consequently they fail to study about this issue. It is generally assumed that we cannot understand the Godhead, and in-depth study of God's word does not clearly reveal the Godhead to our finite minds. With all the voices out in the world proclaiming a confusing, complicated, incomprehensible Godhead what does the word say about our ability to understand this important doctrine?

Romans 1:19-20
19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

This verse is a direct contradiction of the old saying that the Godhead is a mystery that we can never understand. The Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 3:15-16) to write this verse, and as such this is God's authoritative word that He has CLEARLY revealed Himself to man, and has left men without any excuse for not understanding the invisible things of Him, even His eternal power and Godhead.

The doctrine of the Godhead is something that can be clearly seen (understood), but this only can occur as long as one correctly interprets the word of God. The correct way to interpret Scripture is to take it literally at all times, unless figurative language is used. But even then we should look for the literal meaning that figurative language conveys. When this rule, which is the art and science of Biblical interpretation called hermeneutics (from the Greek word hermeneuo, to explain in words, to interpret, to expound), is consistently followed the Scriptures go from being complex and mysterious, to simple and understandable. Although it may take a lifetime to begin to fully learn the things the Scripture contains, they still are not confusing.

Deuteronomy 29:29
29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of the law.

Some teachers go to this verse as "proof " that we cannot understand the Godhead, because supposedly the Godhead is a secret thing that belongs to the Lord. This argument crumbles under the whole counsel of the word of God which shows that God has clearly revealed Himself, and has not attempted to make His existence and reality unknown. The doctrine of the Godhead is a doctrine that God has revealed to us, and according to the Scripture above belongs "to us and to our children, that we may do all the words of the law." While this verse does not directly apply to the Godhead, it directly applies to any doctrine that the Lord God has chosen to reveal to His people, and the Godhead would be one of those doctrines.

With the over 20,000 things that God has said about Himself in Scripture it is not hard to get a clear and confident understanding of your Creator and your Lord. God's highest desire for man has been that of them having fellowship with Him and Him having fellowship with them. You cannot have fellowship with Someone that you know absolutely nothing about, and Who you believe hides Himself from your desires to know and understand Him. God does not play such games with the ones He loved so much "...that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).
