The Unpardonable Sin

Many people have been scared by the devil into believing that they have committed the unpardonable sin. Then modern theologians give all kinds of fool theories for what the unpardonable sin is, thus confusing the issue even more. Yet, the Bible is as plain as day on this issue, regardless of what people want to believe about it.

Matthew 12:30-32
30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.
31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

This is very clear. The "unpardonable sin" as it is called, the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost is simply that, speaking against the Holy Ghost. If anyone has done this they shall not be forgiven in this world or in the world to come.

1 John 5:16-18
16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
17 All unrighteousness is sin: and there is a sin not unto death.
18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not; but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.

Here we see that there is a sin unto death and a sin not unto death. The results of each sin are given below:

A "brother" can sin a sin unto death, which means that once one is saved they are not exempt from backsliding to the point of blaspheming the Holy Ghost and never being forgiven.

This is not talking about physical life and death as Bible doubters claim, for the person that sins a sin NOT unto death is still in need of prayer for life to be restored. How can they commit a sin that does not lead to death and still need life restored if this is talking about physical life? God does not reward those that sin by killing them off before they get into too much sin so that He can take them to be with Him. Sinners are the enemies of God, not His children! Read v.18 of the above quoted chapter and 1 John 3:1-10 and this all becomes clear. The life mentioned here is eternal life and the death is the unpardonable sin.

This issue is quite plain when the Scriptures are taken for what they say and not what they do not say. The Scriptures say nothing about a continual hardness of heart toward the Holy Spirit being the unpardonable sin, nor anything else of the host of made up unpardonable sins. It is plainly said to be speaking against the Holy Ghost.

People may claim that a sin they have committed is not unpardonable, and while this may be true, it is not pardoned UNTIL they confess and forsake it (Proverbs 28:13; Luke 13:3, 5; 1 John 1:9). Any sin and blasphemy besides the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost can be forgiven, but without proper confession and full repentance one will not be forgiven.

Generally it is said that if someone is worried that they committed the unpardonable sin then they have not, because if they did they would not be worried about it, for they would be so hardened. This may be true to some small extent, but read Hebrews 12:14-16 and you will see that sometimes people can genuinely try to reconcile a wrong but could not repent. This is directly applied to believers getting into sin and becoming defiled. No one is beyond sin or the unpardonable sin, but believers need not fret, for they are secure in Christ as long as they faithfully serve Him.

If you believe that you have committed the unpardonable sin then please pray to the Lord and see whether this is so. It may be that you have not committed it and are simply having the enemy try to strike fear into you and scare you away from ever repenting of your sins and being washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ.
