ORIGINAL SIN

Like so many false doctrines today, original sin derived its roots from the pagan Roman Catholic church. It is so widely accepted today that to question it is to question the very gospel in many people's eyes. Generally the false doctrine goes something like this: When Adam sinned, he sinned not only for himself but for all mankind, because the whole race was in his loins. Adam's sin had a universal effect, which imposes a guilt on all mankind. When he fell he sinned for all, because he was the moral and spiritual head for the whole race. Adam's will was that of the whole human race. Through Adam's sin human nature is naturally corrupt. Thus, men are born damned with a sinful nature, and would be damned even if they had no personal sin. There are some variations of this among people, but this is the sum total of the doctrine.

Some even boldly proclaim error and heresy by saying:

If someone were to live out a perfect, holy life, untainted by sin, just as Christ did, with no sin even in his thoughts, this man still would not be sinless and accepted before God because of original sin.

Why try to obey God then? You are "damned if you do, and damned if you don't" according to this doctrine. Is it any wonder why the men most boldly proclaiming the original sin doctrine themselves are living below the standards of holiness as required for true believers? This doctrine or theological fiction gives them comfort in thinking that they are damned for someone else's wrong, and not for their own. Thus, it is easy to blame someone else and charge God with folly as long as personal responsibility is dodged. (Not all people who teach original sin are like this, but far too many are.)

Where does the Bible teach that the whole human race was in Adam when he sinned? It is not Acts 17:26, for that only teaches that we all descended from one man, not that we were all in him when he sinned. In common sense and reality the only people actually in Adam were his children by his seed. Even at that the seed that conceived them may not have been in Adam when he sinned, thus even Adam's children would not have been "in" him when he sinned.

This doctrine makes God into one of the most unjust people in all the universe, for He would not be damning men for their own personal sins, but for the sin of another. Such a teaching is not the teaching of the all wise God Who chose out of His marvelous grace to save men when they deserved nothing better than hell, rather it charges God with folly.

The natural assumption is that if mankind did not have a sin nature passed down then one could live sin-free in this world and would not need the salvation of Christ. This is true. Yet, since when has living right become looked down upon? Is God against men living right, or for them living right? It is the height of arrogance to assert that God would rather have men in sin so He can save them, than to believe that God wants men to be free from sin and sent His Son to free fallen man from sin. Sadly, all men have sinned (Rom. 3:23), but this does not rule out the possibility of one living free from sin. It simply acknowledges that no one has done that beside Christ.

Jesus acknowledged the possibility of people having no need for repentance. In Luke 15:7 He says, "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance." Preacher, your original sin doctrine makes this teaching of Jesus into foolishness, for He clearly acknowledges that some people could need no repentance. Why? Because they had never sinned. Yet, sadly all do eventually sin and fall from God's grace (Romans 3:23).

DO BABIES GO TO HELL?

Many proponents of original sin, but not all, teach that man is born with a sinful nature that damns them without any sin on their own part and that babies are just as much liable for hell as adults. Thus, according to these proponents of original sin, a newborn baby is fully responsible for their salvation, and if they die in their sinful state they would be damned to eternal hell! Some even teach that the baby in the womb that dies before being birthed will spend eternity in hell also because of original sin!

Many of the people that teach the false doctrine of original sin reject the theory that babies will go to hell because of the horribly wicked implication upon the justice and mercy of God, but it is impossible to truly hold to original sin and not believe that babies will go to hell. If original sin was true and a baby was not damned from birth (or before) for their sinful nature inherited from Adam, then God would be a respecter of persons in damning adults for their supposed sinful nature inherited from Adam. Yet, these same people that proclaim original sin as being Biblical, also will deny God's justice in damning babies but allow it for adults. This is hypocritical and proves that even the teacher of original sin doubts the whole false teaching of original sin.

One who believes the lie that babies were born with a sin nature or a nature that damns them regardless of personal action must also deny the following Scriptures teaching children will be in the kingdom of God: Matthew 19:14; Mark 10:14; Luke 18:16.

If these people did not teach the false doctrine of original sin they would not even have to labour on the point of babies going to hell, because they would know that no man is born with a sin nature, thus no innocent child would go to hell upon death. The Bible is clear on this issue, and only when one perverts the truth and clings to the traditions of men could they come up with such a horribly false teaching as is found in the teaching of the false doctrine of original sin.

WHAT THE BIBLE DOES SAY

Ecclesiastes 7:29
29   Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions.

If you believe this Scripture you must reject the false doctrine of original sin. God made man upright, BUT they have sought out many inventions. This is not because of a sinful nature, because God did not make them sinful, but upright. It can only be due to the universalness of temptation that causes men to seek out many inventions.

This is not a reference to Adam and Eve as many original sin teachers teach. They use Genesis 1:27 to "prove" that Adam and Eve together are called "man" at times. Let us look at the verse in question.

Genesis 1:27
27   So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

Man is used in reference to the "created he him" as in the one man, Adam. "Them" is used after this part explaining that he did not stop with man only, but He created mankind male and female. Thus, this verse does not help them get out of believing the truth of Ecclesiastes 7:29!

Also, it must be noted that the Hebrew for "create" and for "made" means two different things. The use of "made" in Ecclesiastes 7:29 proves that this does not refer to Adam and Eve, because they were created (i.e. formed out of nothing) upright, but the man or mankind mentioned in Ecclesiastes 7:29 was made (i.e. formed out of already existing materials) upright. All humans since Adam and Eve have been made upright by God forming them in the womb, while Adam and Eve were so by direct creation.

That God forms children in the womb is clear in Scripture (Genesis 9:6; Psalms 94:9; Proverbs 26:10; Isaiah 44:2, 24; 49:5; Jeremiah 1:5; Romans 9:20), although the mother can marr this formation by substances and actions that harm the unborn child. Thus to say that a sin nature is in men from birth is to charge God with putting this sin nature in man. Thus, you have a god who is by design damning each and every individual without any action or choosing on their part. This charging God with the putting of sin in man is, of course, foolish and wicked.

THE THREE NATURES REVEALED IN THE BIBLE

  1. The innocent and upright nature; the human nature. All humans are born with this nature (Ecclesiastes 7:29).
  2. The voluntary sinful nature. This is the spirit and nature of the devil, the old man, which is received only AFTER one has committed sin (Ezekiel 18; Galatians 5:24; Ephesians 2:1-3; 4:22; Colossians 3:5-9).
  3. The voluntary divine nature. This is the spirit and nature of God, the new man, which is received at the new birth only after one has believed on Jesus Christ through faith and full repentance (Luke 13:3, 5; John 3:3-8, 16; Ephesians 4:24; Colossians 3:10; 2 Peter 1:4).

With these Scriptures in mind where does the Bible say that we are born with a sin nature? The only times anything close to a sin nature is mentioned it is always in the person who has it because of their own personal sins and not that of Adam or any other man.

PROOF TEXTS USED TO "PROVE" ORIGINAL SIN

Psalms 51:5
5   Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

This is the all-time favorite proof-text of the proponents of original sin. Yet, this says nothing about all mankind, but only about David. Yet, even at that, it is not, nor is it intended to state the true nature of children (Eccl. 7:29), or of David himself (Ps. 139:13-16). Read the entire Psalm and it becomes clear that David is simply speaking majesticly on the weight of his sin as if he was wholly formed and conceived in iniquity. Paul, when looking back on the grievous sins he had committed, said that he was chief of sinners, and yet no one thinks Paul was the greatest sinner around in his time, for he was born-again. Why is it so hard for people to recognize someone taking liberty at viewing their sins grotesquely and expressing this by things like, "I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me?"

Supposedly since original sin passes through the man only and not the woman, that is why Jesus was born of a virgin (Cp. Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:32, 35). If this is true, then why does the favorite proof-text of those that teach original sin say, "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me" (Ps. 51:5)?

Also, it must be noted that this Psalm is a prayer of repentance, and not an excuse making prayer on the part of David. If he was meaning Psalms 51:5 to the way people today pervert it then he was making an excuse for his sin and not being a truly humble and contrite man. Thus, not only God gets charged with folly, but so does David.

Romans 5:12-21
12   Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
13   (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.
14   Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.
15   But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
16   And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.
17   For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)
18   Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.
19   For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
20   Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
21   That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Due to the number of verses in the above proof-text, I will comment on each individually.

Romans 5:12
12   Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:

This verse should be self-explanatory, but those that teach original sin see something totally different from the plain reading of the text here. By one man sin entered into the world. This does not mean that a sin nature or original sin was passed down, rather that it entered the world, just as it states. And so death passed upon all men. Death passed upon all men, not sin. This has to do with the original sin's consequences and nothing else. Just as if a man made a bad business decision and lost his family's home, the children and wife would reap the consequences even though they had no part in the bad business decision. Yet, the wife and children would not be held accountable for the man's mistake, even though they may reap the consequences. So it is with Adam's sin. We do reap some of the natural consequences of his sin, but are not held accountable for it. For that all have sinned. Here is the teaching that destroys the original sin theory. It is by personal sin, not some sin nature that man is born with.

Romans 5:13
13   (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law.

For until the law sin was in the world. By Adam's transgressing the law of God not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17; 3:1-11) sin entered the world. Thus, before the Law of Moses there was sin in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. This is because the actions that would be called sin now that there is a law could not be properly called sin until there was a law for one to transgress, "for sin is the transgression of the law" (1 John 3:4).

Romans 5:14
14   Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses. Even though sin was not imputed when there was no law, death still reigned over men, because they went against the "law" of their own consciences. Even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression. This alone disproves the original sin theory, because some men did not sin after the similitude of Adam's transgression, thus they could not be damned for his sin. Who is the figure of him that was to come. Even as Adam brought sin into the world which caused many to choose sin and become sinners, so did Christ bring freedom from sin into the world which caused many to choose life and become saved (v.15, 19).

Romans 5:15
15   But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

The offence. Adam's sin was offensive to God. So it is the same with all sin committed by men. Through the offence of one many be dead. Not all are dead, only many, for Enoch and Elijah were taken to heaven alive (Genesis 5:24; 2 Kings 2:1-11). Much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace. The power of death over many was great, but the grace of God and the gift by grace is far more powerful! Which is by one man, Jesus Christ. The Bible is perfectly clear that Jesus Christ was fully man along with being fully God (v.15; John 1:1, 14; 1 Timothy 2:5; 3:16; 1 John 4:2). Hath abounded unto many. The grace of God and the gift by grace "hath abounded unto many." It has not abounded unto all, for all do not chose to be saved through faith and repentance (Mark 16:16; Luke 13:3, 5; John 3:16; Acts 2:38; 1 John 1:9).

Romans 5:16
16   And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification.

For the judgment was by one to condemnation. The judgment came by and was set upon one, Adam, to condemnation. This should be proof enough that the judgment and condemnation for Adam's sin did not pass upon all men, but was only experienced by him. Many offences. Adam's descendents through their seeking out many inventions have caused many offences. This is due to their own choice to sin and not remain upright like God made them (Ecclesiastes 7:29). But the free gift is of many offences unto justification. The free gift of salvation bestows justification upon even those who have committed many offences and who choose to leave sin for Christ.

Romans 5:17
17   For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

One man's offence. The single sin of Adam in Genesis 3:1-8. Death. Spiritual and eternal death as well as physical. All of these "deaths" reigned because Adam allowed them to. We have no choice in physical death, but we do have the choice in becoming spiritually dead and if we refuse to repent eventually entering eternal death in hell. By one. By the one man Adam. Much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness. Everything Christ did for us and gives to us is always "much more" than sin's consequences and punishments. Shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. We who have received the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, namely Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:18
18   Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.

Neither the judgment or the free gift come upon men except by their own choice. No man is saved without choosing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and no man in damned unless they choose to sin.

Romans 5:19
19   For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners. They were not made sinners involuntarily, but chose to commit sin, the sin that Adam's disobedience brought into the world. So by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Likewise, men are not made righteous involuntarily, but choose to become righteous by believing on Christ through faith and repentance. It is clear from the context that men are "made sinners" the same way that they are "made righteous," that is, voluntarily by their own free will. This does not prove original sin as many false teachers say. Jesus was not a sinner, nor did He have a nature that damned Him or would cause Him to be damned, which by itself proves that a human being is not born with a sin nature. You are made a sinner by your own choices and not that of another. This is why Jesus' choices as fully man kept Him free from ever committing a sin, while all other men have chosen to sin.

Romans 5:20
20   Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

Law. The Mosaic Law. Entered. Gr. pareisercomai (pareiserchomai), entered, came in privily, came in beside, came in bye the bye. Only occurs here and in Gal. 2:4 That. Gr. hina, that. This Gr. word almost always means "in order that," but occasionally means "so that." It should not, however, be translated "in order that" because the Gr. words for "in" and "order" are not present. Yet, the meaning should always be understood to mean "in order that." But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. This is not teaching that we need to sin more to allow more grace in our lives as some false teachers teach. Rather it contrasts the abounding of sin to the power of God's grace to "much more abound." God's grace always overcome sin and never is outdone by transgression.

Romans 5:21
21   That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

That as sin hath reigned unto death. Sin always endures unto death. Adam's sin brought consequences to his children such as death, but our personal sin only deepens the physical death and spiritual death, and ensures us eternal death in hell if we refuse to repent. Even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. The grace of God reigns through righteousness (not sin!) unto eternal life by Christ Jesus our Lord. If we receive this grace and do not fall from it (Gal. 5:2), then it will reign unto eternal life in our lives, just like sin reigns unto death!

Job 14:4
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

Mary, Jesus' mother, was a sinner in need of a Saviour (Luke 1:46-47; Romans 3:23). Are we going to say that Jesus was unclean simply because His mother was an unclean sinner? I think not. She needed no "Immaculate Conception" as the pagan church teaches, for all humans are born without sin. Mary chose to sin and thus needed a Saviour as her own words clearly show, "My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour" (Luke 1:46-47). If God was her Saviour than she must have sinned, because the Saviour came to "save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). So if we are going to use this verse to "prove" the original sin doctrine we must also accept that Jesus was born unclean, or simply recognize it for what it means: a human which has short length of days and is destined for death cannot produce another human which is free from death (Job 14:4-5).

Psalms 58:3
3   The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies.

The wicked. This sets up the context of this verse. Many use this verse as a proof-text for their pet doctrine called original sin, but this verse does not mention the righteous. How then can this apply to all men from Adam down? They go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. This should be proof enough that the idea is not that of the wicked being literally estranged from the womb and going astray and speaking lies as soon as they are born. A newborn cannot lie or go astray, for they cannot deceive anyone or attempt to deceive, nor can they know of any law to go astray from. Speaking lies. No newborn can speak, much less speak lies, thus communicating deception. Clearly this cannot be taken to represent the nature of innocent children from birth. The whole idea of this verse is that of the mind set of the wicked being quick to sin, even as if they were born estranged, going astray, and speaking lies.

Ephesians 2:3
3   Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

It is assumed that this verse proves that we inherit a sin nature from Adam. This is erroneous in two main points:

  1. These men in question that "were by nature the children of wrath" had already reached an age of accountability and sinned, thus taking on the nature of the devil. It has nothing at all to do with any nature by birth. If it did then you must believe that newborn babies, who cannot be held accountable for keeping a law that they cannot even recognize, are just as damned as adults who CAN be held accountable for their rebellion against God's Will (Romans 5:13; 7:8-9).

  2. Paul uses the same Greek word phusei which is translated "by nature" here in Romans 2:14 where he says, "For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves." Obviously "by nature" could not imply something that is inherited or given at birth because these Gentiles could not have been keeping the law from birth!

POPULAR TEACHINGS ON ORIGINAL SIN

THE WESTMINSTER CONFESSION

Chapter 6 - Of the Fall of Man, of Sin, and of the Punishment Thereof
1. OUR first parents, being seduced by the subtlety and temptation of Satan. sinned in eating the forbidden fruit. This their sin God was pleased, according to his wise and holy counsel, to permit, having purposed to order it to his own glory.
2. By this sin they fell from their original righteousness, and communion with God, and so became dead in sin, and wholly defiled in all the faculties and parts of soul and body.
3. They being the root of all mankind, the guilt of this sin was imputed, and the same death in sin and corrupted nature conveyed to all their posterity, descending from them by ordinary generation.
4. From this original corruption, whereby we are utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, do proceed all actual transgressions.
5. This corruption of nature, during this life, doth remain in those that are regenerated: and although it be through Christ pardoned and mortified, yet both itself, and all the motions thereof, are truly and properly sin.
6. Every sin, both original and actual, being a transgression of the righteous law of God, and contrary thereunto, doth, in its own nature, bring guilt upon the sinner, whereby he is bound over to the wrath of God, and curse of the law, and so made subject to death, with all miseries spiritual, temporal, and eternal.

This is putrid and blasphemous, and yet people accept it as truth. This makes sin pleasing to their god because he can order it to his own glory! "The corruption of nature, during this life, doth remain in those that are regenerated" according to these original sin teachers. This totally does away with the work on the cross! ALL people that become born-again are new creatures in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17)! This is because of the precious blood of Jesus making us redeemed. The very act of becoming regenerated goes against having a corruption of nature in you after you are saved by Jesus from ALL SIN!

And for all you "reformed" teachers:

THE HEIDELBERG CATECHISM

Question 4
What does the law of God require of us?
Answer 4
Christ teaches us that briefly, Matt. 22:37-40, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first and the great commandment; and the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." (Deut.6:5; Lev.19:18; Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27)
Question 5
Canst thou keep all these things perfectly?
Answer 5
In no wise; (Rom.3:10,20,23; 1 John 1:8,10) for I am prone by nature to hate God and my neighbour.(Rom.8:7; Eph.2:3; Tit.3:3; Gen.6:5; Gen.8:21; Jer.17:9; Rom.7:23)
Question 6
Did God then create man so wicked and perverse?
Answer 6
By no means; but God created man good, (Gen.1:31) and after his own image, (Gen.1:26,27) in true righteousness and holiness, that he might rightly know God his Creator, heartily love him and live with him in eternal happiness to glorify and praise him. (Col.3:9,10; Eph.4:23,24; 2 Cor.3:18)
Question 7
Whence then proceeds this depravity of human nature?
Answer 7
From the fall and disobedience of our first parents,Adam and Eve, in Paradise; (Gen.3; Rom.5:12,18,19) hence our nature is become so corrupt, that we are all conceived and born in sin. (Ps.51:5; Gen.5:3)
Question 8
Are we then so corrupt that we are wholly incapable of doing any good, and inclined to all wickedness?
Answer 8
Indeed we are; (Gen.8:21; John 3:6; Gen.6:5; Job 14:4; Job 15:14,16,36; Isa.53:6) except we are regenerated by the Spirit of God. (John 3:3,5; 1 Cor.12:3; 2 Cor.3:5)
Question 9
Does not God then do injustice to man, by requiring from him in his law, that which he cannot perform?
Answer 9
Not at all; (Eph.4:24; Eccl.7:29) for God made man capable of performing it; but man [Adam], by the instigation of the devil, (John 8:44; 2 Cor.11:3; Gen.3:4) and his own wilful disobedience, (Gen.3:6; Rom.5:12; Gen.3:13; 1 Tim.2:13,14) deprived himself and all his posterity of those divine gifts.
Question 10
Will God suffer such disobedience and rebellion to go unpunished?
Answer 10
By no means; but is terribly displeased (Gen.2:17; Rom.5:12) with our original as well as actual sins; and will punish them in his just judgment temporally and eternally, (Ps.5:5; Ps.50:21; Nah.1:2; Exod.20:5; Exod.34:7; Rom.1:18; Eph.5:6; Heb.9:27) as he has declared, "Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things, which are written in the book of the law, to do them." (Deut.27:26; Gal.3:10)

This speaks for itself. This is the way these people actually think and does not reflect the Bible's teaching in any way, shape, or form.

THE LAW OF FIRST MENTION

An important point is to notice that when the fall occurred there is absolutely no mention of a sin nature being passed down or any punishment on Adam and Eve's children for the "original sin." Let us read the verses telling of what actually is rendered in God's judgment on Adam and Eve for their sin.

Genesis 3:16-19
16   Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17   And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18   Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19   In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

Where is anything close to the original sin doctrine taught here? Why did God not mention any such thing except it be that the doctrine of original sin is a doctrine of men and devils?

ARGUMENTS FOR ORIGINAL SIN REFUTED
Their arguments are given in blue.

It is obvious that children inherit the sin nature of Adam by their very selfishness in whining, crying, and throwing temper tantrums; etc.

This is the common argument brought up in defense of original sin. This shows the ignorance of the one making such a point, because those children have no sin. They have no ability to recognize and obey the law, thus they have no sin until they reach a state of accountability (Romans 5:13; 7:8-9).

It is foolishness to act as if sin is something that can be passed down from generation to generation. Sin is a wilful action, that of transgressing the law (James 4:17; 1 John 3:4). How can transgressing the law be passed down when it requires the wilful action on the part of an individual? Guilt is not passed down based upon family origin (Exodus 20:5; Deuteronomy 24:16; Ezekiel 18), like that of the human race's origin in Adam.

If we would have been with Adam and Eve we would have sinned with them. Thus, it is fair for God to punish us for Adam's sin, for we would have done the same thing.

Would we have done the same thing? I cannot make such slanderous statements against the whole human race. This is based upon assumption and not any reasonable truth.

How could Christ represent the whole human race and pay the penalty for sin as the second Adam, if Adam did not also represent the whole human race when he sinned?

Christ did not represent the whole human race. Before Christ and during Christ's life many died in sin and plunged into the depths of hell never to be able to find redemption. Jesus paid the penalty for all sin, not for all mankind, but that payment is only applied to those who choose to apply it by repenting and believing on the Lord Jesus Christ. In this respect we can see Adam's and Christ's similarity (Romans 5:12-19), because unless you choose to sin you will not be punished for sin. Likewise, unless you choose to be saved from sin you will not be saved from sin.

When God formed Adam He breathed the breath of life into him. All humans since then, including Eve, carried on that life or spirit of man. How can a man who has a sinful nature pass down a good one then?

This misses the point. When we are talking about the sinful nature then we are talking about the old man of sin (Romans 6-7; Galatians 5:24) and not the human spirit. Just as we have a choice to take up the old man by committing sin, so do we have the choice to put off the old man by repentance and full faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 5:24). Also, God word is clear that God makes man upright (Ecclesiastes 7:29). He does not make them with a sin nature, nor are they held responsible for the sin of others.

Even if we never sin, we are still sinners. And until you and I realize that we are sinners by birth, we cannot understand that which Christ accomplished for us on the Cross of Calvary.

This is totally against the justice of even wicked men, and yet you are going to dare blaspheme the Maker of heaven and earth by putting injustice on His side? Where does the Scripture ever say that we are sinners "even if we never sin?" Where do the Scriptures ever say, "[U]ntil you and I realize that we are sinners by birth, we cannot understand that which Christ accomplished for us on the Cross of Calvary?" Neither of these ideas are in the Scriptures. The only people that thought even close to this way were the Christ-denying Pharisees who told the man that was born blind but was healed by the Lord Jesus "Thou wast altogether born in sins" (John 9:34).

PROOFS ORIGINAL SIN IS FALSE

  1. Jesus would have to be a sinner if one believes the Biblical truth that Jesus was fully man (John 1:1, 14; 1 Timothy 3:16; Hebrews 2:11, 14, 16-18; 4:15), because original sin would have to have passed to Him being fully man. If a sin nature from original sin passed down to all men and Jesus did not receive it, then He could not be fully man, thus teaching original sin would have to lead you to deny Jesus' humanity in some way (Cp. 1 John 4:1-3; 2 John 7).

  2. Even sinful, God-hating reprobates would not have the form of justice that this doctrine ascribes to the Almighty loving God.

  3. Man in his natural law does not hold men responsible for things they did not do and had no part in. Why would God have a less just government than that of His creation?

  4. Salvation is of grace (Eph. 2:8-9), but if man was born with a nature that damned them or with the guilt for Adam's sin, then God's justice would require that He save man from what He made them to be born with. Thus, it would not be anymore of grace.

  5. If Christ did not have this sin nature as original sin teaches He was the only one who did not, then it denies the truth of Hebrews 2:17, "Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people."

  6. Sin is a voluntary action, thus how can one be born with a nature to sin? There is no choice made, nor rebellion planned by the one in the womb, thus how can they have a nature to transgress the law they do not even know?

  7. Romans 5:19 says, "For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous." Note that it say "many were made sinners" and not all. To quote from the above commentary, "Jesus was not a sinner, nor did He have a nature that damned Him or would cause Him to be damned, which by itself proves that a human being is not born with a sin nature. You are made a sinner by your own choices and not that of another. This is why Jesus' choices as fully man kept Him free from ever committing a sin, while all other men have chosen to sin."

  8. When one is saved they are born-again (John 3). If our original birth was in sin then when we are born-again we would simply be restored to our birth state of sin (thus defeating the purpose of the born-again experience), however when we are born-again we are restored to a state of holiness. This is clear proof that Jesus did not consider people as being born in sin, otherwise we would not be "born-again." Thus, for the re-birth to not constitute us going back to the supposed birth state of original sin, then it must be that we are not born in such a state originally and when we are born-again we are restored to our birth state of holiness and sinlessness in Him.

THE CONCLUSION OF THE WHOLE MATTER

In conclusion, it is putting it far to kindly to say that the doctrine of original sin is pure and utter foolishness and nonsense. It contradicts the natural God-given reasoning that we use to explain EVERY single BIBLICAL doctrine. It makes God into a monster that has formed His creatures to be damned from birth and disobey Him by nature, thus they have no true free will in the matter. It thoroughly perverts personal responsibility and charges God with folly. It does not lead to holiness, rather to excuse making and denial of personal wrong doings causing one to be damned. (People have excused murder, adultery, lying, cheating, sodomy, rape, incest, coveting, idolatry, and all manner of sin on the basis of this one false doctrine alone. It lends itself to help people excuse sin rather than get free from sin. The fruit of the original sin doctrine is a testimony against it.) Thus, we should stick with the Bible's plain teachings and always avoid the doctrines and commandments of men.
