AMY GRANT: A DIVORCER

In the May 1999 issue of Charisma & Christian Life Magazine, called "Charisma" for short, there was a news brief about Amy Grant. The News Brief reads as follows:

AMY GRANT FILES FOR DIVORCE Contemporary Christian singer Amy Grant filed for divorce from Gary Chapman, her husband of 16 years, in March [1999], citing irreconcilable differences. Grant has been an artist on Word Entertainment's Myrrh label for more than 20 years and is considered one of today's most influential Christian artists. Chapman, who hosts a popular TV show on The Nashville Network, also is known for his pioneering in contemporary Christian music. The couple have three children, ages 11, 9, and 6.

"Irreconcilable differences?" What? Was Gary trying to pray and read the Bible and she wanted no part of it? The Bible gives absolutely no call for divorce in marriage! You can divorce during the espousal period BEFORE THE MARRIAGE IS OFFICIAL! If you divorce after marriage you are willfully sinning against God and are slapping Him in the face with your hatred of Him and His New Testament Laws. If this contemporary "Christian" music singer would only get saved then she could stand in faith and change herself and work with her husband to work everything out. "Irreconcilable differences" is no excuse for sin and God will not tolerate such filthiness on the judgment day!

The very suggestion that her differences with the man that she pledged to stay with for the rest of her life are "irreconcilable" is very saddening. A true believer knows that, "with God all things are possible" (Matthew 19:26), and, "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth" (Mark 9:23).

She was "dating" country singer Vince Gill before she was divorced (and Gill is a divorcee also, divorcing his wife in 1997). In the November 1999 copy of CCM Magazine, on page 35, Amy Grant made the point that she told her husband, "I believe and trust that I've been released from this [the marriage covenant]." Now all believers know that there is no such release from the marriage covnenant except DEATH (Romans 7:3; 1 Cotinthians 7:39).

Amy Grant is against those that are against premarital relations and "Rock 'n' Roll" (Amy Grant, interview, Ladies Home Journal, December 1985, p. 210). She believes that "God can't solve everyone's problems" (Amy Grant, interview, Family Circle, September 9, 1986, p. 24). She believes that it is "good for a laugh" to use filthy, God-hating profanity "among friends" (Amy Grant, interview, Ladies Home Journal, December 1985, p. 100). Surely Christians cannot encourage or abide by such a person who goes against the word of God.

We need to pray for Amy and Gary. Maybe they will do the Godly thing and start following the Lord if we are faithful to pray for them. The Lord can save Amy Grant and bring her to full repentance and faith in Him. Let us pray that He does so and that she becomes a glorious witness for Him.

Music is not Christian simply because someone who pretends to be a Christian makes it. True Christian music glorifies God and teaches Bible truths. Contemporary pretend "Christian" music glorifies man's singing abilities, drum beats, "stage presence," and everything else that the world does in its music. Yet, it is called Christian simply because pretend Christians sing it. We need to have no fellowship with unrighteousness and "touch not the unclean thing" (2 Corinthians 5:14-18) and "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them" (Ephesians 5:11).
