THE GODHEAD BY RYAN HICKS © 1996-1999 Ryan Hicks |
[The following is taken from Faith of God Bible College's Course #10 - The Godhead, but all questions are left out.]
The majority of modern day "Christianity" is blinded to understanding the Godhead. Yet, it is one of the most simple doctrines in all of Scripture. I have personally explained the Godhead to young children, and they understood the Bible's teachings on the Godhead in only a few minutes. So it should be extremely simple for adults to understand. This doctrine only becomes difficult to understand when you try to make God in a big mystery and expect unintelligible complexity.
1. THE GODHEAD IS CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD!
Romans 1:19-20
2. GOD IS ONE
Deuteronomy 6:4
3. THERE ARE THREE PERSONS WHO ARE EACH GOD
You may wonder how God can be one, but there be three persons who are each God. Simply put, there are Three equal Persons (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) Who Each are of the one essence that is God. There is not three essences (three Gods), but one essence (one God). These Three Divine Persons are in perfect ontological unity, but are totally separate and distinct from one another. They are not in a mere unity of wills or in a covenant of sorts, but are in a true unity of essense or substance, without divisibility and unable to subsist apart from one another. They are not separate Gods as some men teach, but Three Persons Who are each equally God. For further study on the unity of God, please see my treatise on The Unity of God which deals with numerous plain Scriptures and evidence from the creation for the unity of God.
4. A FEW SCRIPTURES TEACHING TWO AND THREE PERSONS IN THE GODHEAD
When studying these Scriptures notice how God talks to His Son, and His Son talks to the Father. Notice how the Holy Spirit is said to be the Spirit of God, this means that He is from God. Notice how God calls the Holy Spirit His Spirit. These Scriptures are clear that two and three Persons Each called God have been seen at the same time, have talked to each other, and have been sent from one another. Thus, it is abundantly clear from Scripture that there are Three Persons in the Godhead.

7. FALSE TEACHINGS ABOUT GOD
While there are many false teachings about God, there are two main false teachings that are still alive and well in the church. They are:
8. TRITHEISM
Tritheism is the belief in three separate Gods. This is far different than the Godhead which is Three separate Beings Who make up the one God. Tritheism teaches that the three persons in the Godhead are separate and distinct like the Bible does. Yet, Tritheism teaches this to the denying of the perfect unity and oneness of the members of the Godhead (Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 John 5:7).
9. MODALISM
Modalism is basically the exact opposite of Tritheism. Whereas Tritheism teaches the individuality of the members of the Godhead to the denying of the unity and oneness of the members of the Godhead, Modalism teaches the oneness of God to the denying of the three individual persons in the Godhead. According to Modalism there is one being or person who is God, and he manifests himself in three (or more) ways or modes. Most people who claim to believe in the Godhead actually believe Modalism, for they believe that the Godhead is three different manifestations of the one person who is God. Since Modalism is so unreasonable and illogical, most who believe it claim that the Godhead is a mystery that cannot be understood.
