THE GODHEAD

[The following is taken from Faith of God Bible College's Course #10 - The Godhead, but all questions are left out.]

The majority of modern day "Christianity" is blinded to understanding the Godhead. Yet, it is one of the most simple doctrines in all of Scripture. I have personally explained the Godhead to young children, and they understood the Bible's teachings on the Godhead in only a few minutes. So it should be extremely simple for adults to understand. This doctrine only becomes difficult to understand when you try to make God in a big mystery and expect unintelligible complexity.

1. THE GODHEAD IS CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD!

Romans 1:19-20
19   Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20   For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:

This verse is a direct contradiction of the old saying that the Godhead is a mystery that we can never fully understand. The Holy Spirit inspired the Apostle Paul (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 3:15-16) to write that the invisible things of Him (including His eternal power and Godhead) are clearly seen or understood, and as such this is God's authoritative word that He has CLEARLY revealed Himself to man, and has left man without any excuse for not understanding the invisible things of Him, even His eternal power and Deity.

Deuteronomy 29:29
29   The secret things belong unto the L
ORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of the law.

Since God has chosen to reveal Himself to us, we should accept His revelation of Himself. We should not try to pretend that we need a revelation of His revelation. What God has revealed in His word is clear, and we need no further revelation to understand it.

2. GOD IS ONE

Deuteronomy 6:4
4   Hear, O Israel: The L
ORD our God is one LORD:

The Hebrew word translated "one" here is echad which means to be united, to be a compound unity, to be united as one, to be one (See echad's usage in Genesis 2:24; 3:22; 11:6; 34:16, 22; Exodus 24:3; etc). This verse stresses the fact that God is one, not in person, but in unity. Some other verses proving that God is one are Matthew 19:17; Mark 10:18; John 17:11, 22; 1 John 5:7; etc.

3. THERE ARE THREE PERSONS WHO ARE EACH GOD

You may wonder how God can be one, but there be three persons who are each God. Simply put, there are Three equal Persons (the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit) Who Each are of the one essence that is God. There is not three essences (three Gods), but one essence (one God). These Three Divine Persons are in perfect ontological unity, but are totally separate and distinct from one another. They are not in a mere unity of wills or in a covenant of sorts, but are in a true unity of essense or substance, without divisibility and unable to subsist apart from one another. They are not separate Gods as some men teach, but Three Persons Who are each equally God. For further study on the unity of God, please see my treatise on The Unity of God which deals with numerous plain Scriptures and evidence from the creation for the unity of God.

Many preachers have gotten really intelligent lately and figured out that the word "Trinity" is not in the Bible. Thus, they say the Trinity is a false doctrine. The Trinity is a false doctrine brought in by the Roman Catholic cult, but the teaching of the Bible about the Godhead having Three members in perfect unity is not false. Many ministers use the word Trinity in reference to the Godhead, not realizing that the Trinity is a pagan term and is not Biblical. We would do best to stick with the Biblical term, "The Godhead."

The ministers that use the term Trinity may be correct in doctrine but incorrect in term. Even so, saying that a doctrine is false simply because a term used to describe it is not found in the Bible is foolish. Such reasoning, if there is any reasoning to it, is absurd. The word "rapture," (meaning catching away) is also not found in the Bible, but no one Scripturally argues against there being a rapture (1 Corinthians 15:51-57; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17). Simply because a word or phrase that we use to describe a teaching of the Bible is not found in the Bible doesn't mean that the teaching is not in the Bible. As a matter of a fact if we are going to be this ignorant than we need to stop calling the Bible the Bible because the word "Bible" is not found in the Bible.

The Bible makes it abundantly clear, beyond any sane argument, that there are Three separate and distinct Persons Who are each God and are one in unity. The Scriptures teach that the Godhead is made up of a Divine Plurality of Three Divine Persons each with Divine Individuality in Divine Unity.

4. A FEW SCRIPTURES TEACHING TWO AND THREE PERSONS IN THE GODHEAD

When studying these Scriptures notice how God talks to His Son, and His Son talks to the Father. Notice how the Holy Spirit is said to be the Spirit of God, this means that He is from God. Notice how God calls the Holy Spirit His Spirit. These Scriptures are clear that two and three Persons Each called God have been seen at the same time, have talked to each other, and have been sent from one another. Thus, it is abundantly clear from Scripture that there are Three Persons in the Godhead.

7. FALSE TEACHINGS ABOUT GOD

While there are many false teachings about God, there are two main false teachings that are still alive and well in the church. They are:

  1. Tritheism
  2. Modalism

8. TRITHEISM

Tritheism is the belief in three separate Gods. This is far different than the Godhead which is Three separate Beings Who make up the one God. Tritheism teaches that the three persons in the Godhead are separate and distinct like the Bible does. Yet, Tritheism teaches this to the denying of the perfect unity and oneness of the members of the Godhead (Deuteronomy 6:4; 1 John 5:7).

9. MODALISM

Modalism is basically the exact opposite of Tritheism. Whereas Tritheism teaches the individuality of the members of the Godhead to the denying of the unity and oneness of the members of the Godhead, Modalism teaches the oneness of God to the denying of the three individual persons in the Godhead. According to Modalism there is one being or person who is God, and he manifests himself in three (or more) ways or modes. Most people who claim to believe in the Godhead actually believe Modalism, for they believe that the Godhead is three different manifestations of the one person who is God. Since Modalism is so unreasonable and illogical, most who believe it claim that the Godhead is a mystery that cannot be understood.

Modalism is clearly false by the simple truth seen in the numerous Scriptures given above. If there is more than one person who is called God seen at the same time then God cannot be operating in different modes, for He could only be in one mode at a time.

We as believers must reject all the man made and foolish teachings of man about the Godhead and believe the Bible's clear revelation about the Godhead as can be seen in the 1,304 verses given above. If you study these verses the Godhead will become clear and no man can talk you into believing that the Godhead is some mystery beyond our human comprehension.
