Kate Jacoby

Kate Jacoby admits that travelling plays a big role in her writing. She has, at one time or another, lived in a variety of countries around the world. She also spent three years working in a Melbourne theatre, both backstage and as an actor, and two months as a caretaker in a remote Scottish castle - amongst other colourful occupations. Kate has traveled the North American continent, Europe, Britain, Asia, Middle East and Africa but has no plans to write a book about any of it!

Kate started writing short fiction while journeying through Europe, openly influenced by the history she saw in both the buildings and culture. Writing developed slowly from that point as she taught herself simple things such as, what makes up a chapter and how to make characters believable.

‘I’d always been a great reader and adored books where I could totally drown myself in the story. I wanted to be able to write something like that.’

Now Kate admits that writing such books becomes even more involving that reading them which can be a blessing and a curse. She says that writing, like most things, is a craft that takes time to learn and more time to polish. Practice is essential, and so is the willingness to try different things, play with styles, tenses and points of view. Having those skills at your fingertips gives your creativity something to play with.

Kate Jacoby completed her debut novel, Exile's Return while backpacking through the Middle East. It was published Orion in 1998. Her second book, Voice of the Demon, was published in 1999. Black Eagle Rising, the Third Book of Elita is due out in May.

Kate lives in Melbourne with her dog, Sam and a very large atlas.
