M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
They're going to have a summer movie preview tomorrow, Wednesday April 11th on Access Hollywood.
I didn't see what they were going to show but I heard Moulin Rouge.

Don't forget... it's tonight... it's 7:20pm now and they just announced it so it's in the last 10 minutes of the show.
I have no idea if it's going to be any good.

Grrr... the b------- didn't even mention Moulin Rouge. They showed a still for a 10th of a second and that's it.
Don't bother watching it. It's a waste of 30 minutes, as usual.

Very disapointing
Of all the entertainment shows et,ah and e, access hollywood has carried the least information on MR
They had a few quick clips yesterday and didn't show anything today. They said it was continued tomorrow but didn't show any MR clips.

I wish they'd get rid of "Pat" (or at least tell him to stop shouting). I am so sick of hearing him shout out his lines.

They mentioned it today. Nothing extraordinary, they just said, "this isn't your parents' musical" and showed a very short excerpt of the trailer. Not even worth taping.

I'm starting to think that Access Hollywood doesn't really have "access" to Moulin Rouge promo material like Entertainment Tonight.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
I hate to ruin everyone's fun on dissing Access Hollywood, but tonight they did talk about Moulin Rouge. For about one minute they talked about how it's a "new musical" that everyone should enjoy. It wasn't a lot, but it was something. The clips they showed were nothing new, so nothing was really missed.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
I did say in an earlier post that Access Hollywood did mention Moulin Rouge, and they said that "it wasn't your parents' musical". They showed an excerpt from the trailer. That's it. No interviews, nothing new. It's practically the first time they mention the film.
Entertainment Tonight, on the other hand, has talked about it and has had interviews with Nicole and Ewan since at least May 2nd, 2000 when I did my first screen captures from the film.

They showed pretty much the whole trailer a few weeks ago on E.T. You can still see it on the official Moulin Rouge site.

Ok. Right click on the link below and you'll have a little menu pop up. Choose "save link as" or "save target as". This will save the video to your computer's hard drive. Make a note where it is saved (which folder). Once it has finished downloading the video to your computer, find the file again (it's called moulin_rouge_240.mov) and double-click on it and you'll be able to watch the trailer as often as you'd like.
Right click here and choose "save link as" or "save target as" and click on OK. It will take a while to download depending on your connection speed.

Ok. As usual I'm confused! When you download this, do you have to stay on the internet? Cause I exited & the little download box disappeared. (It said like 40 mins. to download. Dang, that's a long time! Will it tell me when it's done?)

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
Of course you have to stay on the Internet, Lialee! Downloading means copying a file (like the video) from a computer on the Internet to yours. If you disconnect from the Internet before it's finished it won't work, you need the complete file to be able to watch the video.
BTW, 40 minutes is nothing. I spent an entire weekend downloading an 800 megabyte file last year with a 56K modem.
It probably won't tell you when it's done beyond closing the progress window. Just go and do something else for 40 minutes and come back. If you continue surfing the Web while the file is being downloaded into your computer, it will only slow its progress and may cause the download to hang (stop before it's done and you'll have to start over).

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
Lialee, you do indeed have to stay on the internet for the whole download. If you disconnect, you're breaking your connection to the site, and so you'll only get a little itty bitty bit, and i'm sure you want it all.
It'll take 40 minutes at least if you have a slow connection (ie 56k modem or lower). It's a big file, but remember that it comes in three sizes -- choose the smallest, i guess.
I really don't know what i did before I got DSL -- I downloaded the bigass 30 meg trailer in about 5-6 minutes. And taunted my friend about it the whole time, too.
And yes, it will tell you when it's done. You should be able to view your little download box as to the progress of the download, and when it reads 100%, it's done like dinner and the box will go away.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
You need Quicktime player (free).
You can download it from:
www.apple.com
They have a version for PC and Mac, it's free. You'll need to follow their instructions (lower left of the screen) to download it and install it (yes, you have to stay connected to the Internet during the entire process).

Thanks so much, Claude. Got the component all set-up & saw the trailer. Gorgeous! The crispness & color was better than TV. Amazing. And Ewan yelling, "tell me you don't LOVE me!" Certainly worth the download time. But who's this guy playing the villian? The one who's trying to seduce Satine.

That's Richard Roxburgh. He played the blond bad guy in Mission Impossible II (the one who gets his finger chopped off). He's been in a lot of films but that's the only other one I know.
You can check his filmography at the Internet Movie Database.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
Hi Miss Lialee
The villain is Richard Roxburgh, quite a sweet Aussie man really,

Nice!
but he's being an English villain in MR. I love the Toulouse Tonight episodes where he camps it up in his delicate little voice for the camera.
Luckily they've been playing a few of Richard's other movies here recently. He played Ronald Ryan in the miniseries about the last man hanged in Australia, "The Last of the Ryans" and he was in "Doing Time For Patsy Cline" (with then girlfriend Miranda Otto, another Aussie actress)

and "Thank God he met Lizzie"
Here he is with Cate Blanchett
That performance as Ronald Ryan was amazing. He had me in tears as usual, sitting in his gaol cell alone at Christmas waiting to be hanged.
The film, "Passion" was a great success and he played the lead role, Percy Grainger. Here's what Margaret Pomerantz had to say:
A brilliant pianist, an innovative composer, arranger and radical intellectual, Percy Grainger was an eccentric genius who lived life to the fullest.
PASSION is the story of this twentieth century maverick and the intense relationship with his mother, Rose. Interwoven is Percy's musical odyssey which span his world-famous virtuoso playing of great works, his immensely popular arrangements of such hits as "Danny Boy" and "English Country Gardens" and his own ahead-of their-time compositions.
PASSION takes us from the Australian rural countryside of Percy's birth and upbringing, to England where the Graingers lived for many years before the First World War, before settling in America.
As the story unfolds, over a year in the genius's life, it shows Percy's tormented struggle between performing the works of other composers in recitals before Queen Alexandra and London society - fuelled by the need to maintain a well-to-do lifestyle - and his real love of free-style composing.
Check it out here .
Some may remember Richard in Oscar and Lucinda - also with Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett. Richard's character had black hair and a moustache here, and was eventually murdered after causing much grief.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
Richard's quite a well-known actor in Australia. Like Nicole and Mel Gibson, he was trained at NIDA, the prestigious Sydney-based national acting institute. He has a very strong base in theatre but has made the successful cross-over to feature films. Like Ewan, he has also taken a turn at directing, directing a recent Shakespeare production.

That's what I hate about being in the US. No good Aussie TV series. Or magazines. I guess you've seen "Blue Murder", too? Well, lest you be in NSW.
Sigh.
I've no doubt MR will help Ewan, though Lucas did much for him already, but I'm really hoping Richard can get something out of it, too.
Sorry, had to go off on a little tangent there. I'll slink back into the corner now.

Hi Nimue ! Do we have another ex-pat on the board? Please don't slink off, come and join in!
I'm in NSW and I've never seen Blue Murder I'm afraid. I wonder if Pseudgirl in VIC has seen it.
Richard has done some Popcorn Taxi appearances like Ewan. Last year he did a fireside chat.
That Ronald Ryan mini-series was so great, I'd never seen it before and it was on a couple of weeks ago. It really captured Australia in the 60s so well. I hope maybe you will be able to get it on tape over there.

Thanks, Melly & Claude. Glad to see more cute Aussies are landing on our shores. (MI II. Yeah, I remember that guy. Hanging around w/ gorgeous baddie Dougray ) Yep, I completed my download mission last night. The trailer's really something on the PC. The picture's clearer than TV! I've been searching for a way to watch video on the computer for ages. I didn't know it was so simple

Re: Check out that trailer!
It's not always that simple, unfortunately.
You're lucky I gave you the direct link to the video clip. Without it you never would have been able to save it on your computer. I had to look at the HTML source code and find the actual address of where the video was located.
Sometimes even doing that doesn't work. This is especially true of Real Video clips. The official Star Wars site had a bunch of behind the scenes clip (for Episode I) that I was never able to watch because they were in Real Video format and the site was always too busy for me to be able to watch them. Since we couldn't save them on our hard drives, I couldn't watch them. This was a common complaint about the site and now it's possible to save the new videos but you need to either look at the source code or buy a copy of Quicktime (around $30US) which has a "save movie" option that's not available otherwise.

I know others are capable of finding stuff too. The proof is here in this very forum. I happened to be there when she needed the help. It could very well have been someone else instead of me. It's happened before that someone else helped another. So what?
In the case of the link above, it was to help someone who would not have been able to get the video otherwise. Should we let her get frustrated because she couldn't figure out on her own how to download the video?

no but if she is learning about her own computer the frustration factor is always there(I prove this everyday with my own F**ked up situation)I can see if she just wanted to see a clip of our favorite guy(and fast)but sometimes it's fun to find on your own that you have these features on your computer by youself.
I'm sure she was grateful for your help but the tone was kinda weird to me that's all.Sorry,I'm showing my mommy side again.

I love to dig and find out how stuff works. Some people don't.
The trailer has been available for several weeks and she still hadn't been able to see it because, let's face it, streaming video over a 56K (or slower) modem sucks big time.

Re: Check out that trailer!
There's some alternatives for saving videos. These don't all work with those realplayer ones, though, just those in .mov or movie format (like Quicktime). This is how I do it with my Mac. I suspect it will be similar for those with PCs.
Here's an easy trick I taught myself by fooling about a bit:
Method 1:
Start with Internet Explorer. Find the page of the video you want. Then make sure the address bar is revealed so you can see the exact address of the video (with the .mov suffix). Copy that address. Quit Explorer.
Open Netscape: Paste the address in the address bar area and hit "Enter". The video will download perfectly to your desktop, ready to be played with your player.
Method 2
Start with Internet Explorer. Find the page of the video you want. Let it start to load.
Then, go to the File Menu and select "Save As". You can then save the page and video direct to your desktop as a "Web Source" page. Hit "save" and you're done!
Now, using Method '2' means when you double-click on the icon for your newly saved websource, it will open in Explorer just as you saw it when you were on the internet. You won't be able to open it direct with yout Quicktime Player as you would if you used Method "1".
Method 3
This is the method I use if I'm only using Netscape. I find the page I want while online, then select "html source" from the menu. Then you can see the exact address for the video file. Then, copy that address, go back to the Netscape window and paste in the address there. Hit 'Enter' and the video will download perfectly just like in Method 1.
Hope this is helpful I'll put it in the Off-Topic tips area too so people can find it easily. I just figured out these little methods by playing about for a while to get the result I wanted.

Re: Check out that trailer!
Method 1 won't work if you normally use Netscape and the Quicktime plugin is installed to work with Netscape. I've tried it and you see in the status bar, "Launching plugin". The Quicktime plugin launches and it plays.
Also, if the movie is embedded in an html file like those at the Moulin Rouge site and at the Star Wars site, you have to go in the source code, locate the .mov file and hope they're using the full address, like http://www.blahblahblah....com/blahblah/movie.mov, otherwise you have to reassemble it (sometimes they put in a relative link, like embed="/movies/movie.mov" so you have to copy/paste the http://www.... stuff from the address bar with the address in the embed command and you can create a very simple html file:
Right-click <a href="http://www...../.../movies/movie.mov">here</a>
(of course you need to replace the "http://" until ".mov" with the correct address)
Save that line into a text file which you then open in your browser. Right click on the link and you'll get the option to <i>Save link as</i> (or <i>save target as</i>). That's what I did before I bought a copy of Quicktime.
It's a hassle but it was the easiest way for me to save them. Once you've done it a few times it becomes easier.

I had no idea how you posted that direct link, Claude -- i didn't know you could read the html code like that and find it! Coooool....
For the life of me, I forget who posted this for me a couple of weeks ago -- thanks ever so much!!! -- but you can use your computer's search mode to find *.mov files. Also, if you go to your cache, they should be there. That's how i saved all my moulin files. And Claude, where ever did you find all of those Toulouse movies? Every time i visit the Moulin site, they only have 3 episodes, including Christian's.

Trailers & stuff
Do you think it's worth it then, Claude, to just buy the Quicktime Pro? As far as saving time & effort. Cause a lot of the trailers I wanna see are right there on the apple site. It's just getting em downloaded that's the trick. I can't believe these sites don't tell ya how long it's gonna take It seems like the Hollywood bigwigs would want ya to see this stuff. And I'm such a movie freak, I gotta figure out how to do this

Re: Check out that trailer!
Yes. In Netscape, click on "View" and then "Page Source". There's an equivalent in Explorer.
From there, you can press CTRL and F together to open a "Find" window (if using Explorer you need to click on "Edit" and then "Find"). Type in ".mov" (without the quotes) and click on "Find". You need to select and copy the bit that starts with "http" and ends with ".mov". Then paste that line in a simple text file between:
Right click <a href="
and
">here</a>
(put it all on the same line, it's okay if it wraps around if the line is too long)
The link I posted on the first page of this thread would look like this:
Right click <a href="http://a384.g.akamai.net/5/384/51/83c8a4da5703e8/1a1a1aaa2198
c627970773d80669d84574a8d80d3cb12453c02589f25382f668c9329e0375e8177dec649300
6fe450b92786f867dc43a8/moulin_rouge_240.mov ">here</a>
(it should be one long, long line but may "break" on a few lines where there are spaces. I had to add carriage returns, otherwise you would have had to scroll horizontally to see the entire thing but when you do this, don't put in carriage returns)
Save the text file on your desktop or someplace easy to find and name it something like "link.html". You can drag that file into your browser and then right-click on the link and choose "Save link as" option.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
I'm taking notes, Claude! But I just went ahead & downloaded a couple trailers the old way this evening off a couple official sites. One of em was a teaser, so it didn't take but 10 mins or so to load. But you're right, it does take a while to get a handle on this download stuff. I'm so glad we can chat about this PC stuff. I have an uncle who's a big computer dude, but he's such a grouch, I can't ever get him to help me He wouldn't care whether I saw Ewan or not!

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
That method of finding the .mov in the cache sounds great to me, but I just can't get it to work, which is why I invented my convoluted method. In explorer, the whole cache is one file, not broken up in bits like Netscape. So I tried in Netscape but had trouble too. Netscape is easier, though, anyway, because if you have the exact link and hit the enter key it downloads by itself. Our systems must do slightly different things Claude because my default is Quicktime, and Method 1 works for me. But Real Player ones are just a nightmare for me. I'll scratch around and try again next time I'm using Netscape and let you know how I go getting movs out of the cache.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
I don't want to bash Explorer but that's one of the many reasons why I don't use it. I like to be able to dig in my browser's cache. To be fair, not all versions of Explorer work this way, the older versions still create a separate-files cache, usually in c:\windows\temporary internet files\
Also, your Method 1 doesn't work on my computer but it might work on someone else's. The thing is, when you install Quicktime, it asks which browser you're using (you can select either or both, if I recall correctly) and it then installs the plugin for the browser(s) you selected.
In your case, your Netscape doesn't know how to handle the .mov files so it asks you what to do and you save them. In my case, both Netscape and Explorer know what to do with .mov files so they play them.
Also, sometimes you can't retrieve a video file from your cache. If they created an actual streaming file (it plays as it comes in, like Real Video but they can also do this with .avi, .mov and other formats), the file isn't placed in your browser's cache. I don't know if that's the case with Macs but it's the case with PCs. I've hunted all over my hard drive for files (even hidden ones) of the video I was watching and I was never able to find them let alone save them. The people who put up the videos decide what they allow us to do with their videos.
For instance, I was never able to save the Real Video clip of the making of Desserts (in Real Video) or George Lucas in Love (in .asf format, also streaming). I ended up sending the signal from my PC to my VCR so I could record them on a video tape. I managed to get George Lucas in Love in alt.binaries.starwars months later and I still don't know how that person managed it. George Lucas in Love is not currently posted in alt.binaries.starwars, things that get posted there are only available for a day or two, maybe three, but they usually have lots of goodies in there if you check daily.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
You've triggered a memory for me there, I think a couple of months ago I switched around a lot of default settings so the movies wouldn't play straight away, but so I could be asked first, which let me save them.
That making of Desserts movie is great, and I haven't tried saving it since I started using these methods, so I'll have a go and see if any work.

Re: making of Desserts
I've got to check that out. Thanks Claude!
I'm not computer competent at all, but my son showed me how to save the trailer by grabbing it from my temporary internet files and dragging it to my desktop. Then I put it in my Quicktime viewer. All the other stuff sounds so complicated to me! But I'm lucky I can get from one site to another!

Yeah, heard of that George Lucas in Love on Sneak Previews. Sounded really cute You know, I noticed one of these Net movies was put on video recently. I think that one was called Entropy. Maybe they'll do that w/ Lucas thing.

Re: M.R. on Access Hollywood WEDNESDAY
George Lucas in Love is quite amusing. theforce.net used to host it or have a link to it (can't remember which), but i don't know if they still do or not. that's where i saw it, anyway.
Speaking of SW fanfilms, I highly recommend Troops . It's Star Wars done to a "Cops" theme -- really funny!
