6/98 "mother earth's cafe" (albany, ny) review
i like to write my own unbiased reviews while the ringing is still in my ears, and the cigarette smoke is still in my clothes. this show was in mid-june of '98. i believe it was saturday the 13th. this was our first show at this place.
well,
on a scale of 1-10, i'd rate our actual performance a "7"
the traps
"5"
since the "band" (if they can be called that) before us took so long getting off the stage, their set running about 40 minutes into ours, kevin and i felt rushed getting on-stage. i couldn't tune my acoustic guitar due to the excessive noise in and outside the place. it was going to be used in "the ray". kevin used the drum set of the band before us, and this was a judgment error. we learned to pack up "all" of our equipment for "all" shows. none of this "using other people's shit" shit. well, as for the song.......as you may or may not know, "the traps" is an instrumental that builds from a whisper into a scream and then back to a whisper again. as kevin and i were starting the song, this obnoxious woman was talking so loud i couldn't hear my guitar at all. i stopped and asked that the talking stop. i started the song again, and she didn't get the hint.....i stopped again. i said for her to please be quiet. i started again, and she still didn't get the hint. i stopped a third time and asked her matter-of-factly "are you SERIOUSLY going to continue your conversation????" she shut up finally, getting the show off to a nerve-wracking start i didn't recover from for about 2 songs. people couldn't tell if i was joking or not. I WASN'T! the song was pretty much ruined by that point, so i tried to get out of it as gracefully as i could. kevin was a trooper, i must say.....
fly a kite
"7"
probably my favorite song kevin and i ever done. since the "talking woman" incident threw me off, my vocals were a little shaky on this one. the dynamics of the song were terrific, however, and it would turn out to be a popular one of the evening with some audience members.
a woman loves a man who cries
"9"
excellent all-around. it injected an up-beat element of fun into a bewildering first couple of songs. (it's a little funny that the first song is called "the traps", and that the woman wouldn't shut hers)
amber fields
"7"
another excellent song of the evening. great vocals and everything
the ray
"5"
since i rehearsed doing the song on acoustic, my vocals were a little shaky with the electric, a very different instrument. in the first chorus, i either hit a real sour not vocally, or a car honked a horn........i stopped the song and re-sang the chorus. this was by far the weakest performance of the show of one of my favorite songs i've written.
feel the bomb
"10"
this song was the showstopper!!!! very memorable!!!
submarine
"8"
awesome!!!!! high-energy!!! very memorable as well!!!
listening wind
"7"
pretty good. the song really built to a crescendo at the end. i think the vocals were ok, but not outstanding.
tree
"10"
another showstopper. kevin's scream was divine!!!
merely obvious
"10"
one of the best-performed songs of the evening!!!!!
snow
"6"
it was adequate. high energy.... the vocals were a little shaky, but passable considering there was no pa, and my vocals were coming out of the amp along with my guitar.
audience response:
i heard these words..... awesome amazing professional "i love erno" (richard, the club-owner said that) very full-sounding for just 2 people
finances: the jar was passed around after the gig, and the "unit" made $100. 50 for me, 50 for kevin kevin used $34 of it already to take a train back to nyc i used $16 of my share on gas, windshield fluid, and 2 quarts of 30-weight motor oil. all in all, the show was a success. despite my grandma nearly blinding me and kevin, and a pending fistfight with motormouth, it was fun. we'll definitely do it again!!!!!!
see ya,
