10/10/98 cbgb 313 gallery show personal review
i like to write my own unbiased reviews while the ringing is still in my ears, and the cigarette smoke is still in my clothes
hello there,
I just wanted to spew my thoughts on the 10/10 cbgb gallery show while they are still fresh in my mind, and the smell of cigarettes is still in my clothes. all in all, it was a big success. (I always say that) I wasn’t crazy about the soundman. he was pretty much a cold fish, and the stage volume levels were inconsistent. sometimes I couldn’t hear myself. kevin was pretty much in the dark also. despite these hazards, and a little feedback here and there, we came out unscathed. the performers did......my groovebox took a nose dive to the staged from a height of 5’, and a few of the keyboard buttons popped out. luckily, it’s easy for me to repair. unfortunately, the 3 buttons that were damaged were #’s 2,4&5.....these are the EXACT keys needed for kevin’s keyboard support in “sigh”. talk about divine intervention. maybe if kevin played the song on keys, the world would blow-up, or demons from hell would use the cbgb gallery as a gateway to hell..... i’ll fix the groovebox today. (hopefully)
the audience, as usual, was attentive and enthusiastic. there wasn’t much talking at the bar.......a good sign that people were interested in what was happening on stage. most of the audience were people from my work, and jodi’s family. the show was notable because it was the final performance of a 3-day saul williams stint. he’s the star of the about-to-be-talked-about new movie SLAM. kevin and I got to hang with him and his friends. he’s a very kind person. jodi’s dad, the chiropractor, gave adjustments to saul and his friends, as well as kevin. I thought that was very strange and cool. now for the music:
“satellite parade”
10
“a woman loves a man who cries”
10
(I got good responses on this song after the show. kevin was a little shaky getting into the song)
“barney’s “I love you” song”
10
(really lightened the show up. people didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.....exactly what I wanted)
“fly a kite”
10
(one of my favorites of the evening)
“tree”
10
(flawless....kevin’s scream ruled, and he didn’t almost faint)
“sleep on your side”
9
(I gave this a 9 because my vocals were a little shaky at times.....not too bad)
“devil on a bike”
8
(a little rushed, and the vocals were a little shaky)
“sigh”
10
(I did this one alone.....very affective.....one of the audience members singled the song out as their favorite)
“the ballad of john and yoko”
8.5
(kevin messed up the stop...no big deal...vocals weren’t perfect, but the energy was excellent. kevin had to drop the shaker mid-song because it was cutting into his skin (a recurring motif tonight.))
“feel the bomb”
9
(kevin did “disco-style” lighting....kevin also cut his elbow in the cooling fan at the light board......if you recall, sherry, our usual lighting director, lost 1 or 2 fingernails in the same fan....i got a little feedback from my mic, but I moved it immediately, and all was well....an audience member said it reminded him of early pet shop boys)
“icicles”
10
(perfect......michelle’s cello, combined with my guitar, was beautiful and thoughtful....an audience member said he closed his eyes during the piece)
“mistakes”
8
(my vocals could’ve been way better....not as confident as I usually am.....michelle was great....an audience member cited the song as his favorite one) DURING THE APPLAUSE AFTER “MISTAKES” I HEARD THE DREADED “ONE MORE SONG” FROM THE SOUNDMAN, SO I DUMPED “SUBMARINE”
“merely obvious”
10
(one of my favorites.....we had m at the end.......michelle throughout on cello......kevin’s beats were totally on......my guitar and voice were excellent.....the dynamics were great.....great powerful closer)
the band after us, I think, drove a lot of our audience out the door, as well as us. after our set, kevin and I had a little fight. kevin got an aspirin and all was well. saul williams’ audience was HUGE. it was very challenging getting all the equipment out before they started. we did it somehow. on the way out with some drum hardware, I bumped into saul again......i said “do a great show”......he said “dude....i really liked your stuff....i came in about half-way through.” that was nice to hear from a man who is going to be on tv’s and movie theaters all across the nation in the next months. more importantly, micheline loved it. so I think we’ll be playing again in a couple of months.
for all you people wondering how much money kevin and I made:
early morning parking ticket: -$55
musicians: -$200
t-shirts: -$3
cd’s: -$20
karate kid 2 & 3 rental: -$6
payment from the club: +$65
grand total: it cost $219 to do this show
thank you all for your support. the show was a lot of fun. we’ll do it again in 5-6 months or so. we’ll have new songs....as well as some new tricks up our sleeves.
take care,
tom erno
