mike pope's satellite parade album review
mike is a good friend, and an objective one.
got it late in the day....playing during midnight hour. thanx for sending it out. Kevin's pretty good on the traps.....had no idea he could play....his drumming . sounds as sweet and bubbly as he is. I like "peppermintees" (italics are evil, friend) better than "fastback" from the dark ages of 2 People way back in '88......but i do still harbour a soft spot for ye olde Vesta Fire......
Well, on to the disc.... There are definitely some high-spots on it...."Whole Life Seasons" throws me back to 9th-grade pseudo-hippiedom....it's got a 60's feel....good track. Probably that and "submarine" are my favourites of the new things......gotta tell ya, didn't hit it off with the title track, "silent scream" or the hidden extra track ala "Hi-Desert Biker Meth Lab" on Cracker's Kerosene Hat.....great idea, mind you, but it was just too harsh :) the older songs hold up well......"Tarot" works better w/doodles than that machine mania drum track on the earlier version (Betty's Kitchen, I think?)......."Into the Night", sweet, always got off on the atmosphere guitar.....one of your better songs I think....."Kryst" is cool....can't hear anything different from the last version, but it's nice to have a near perfect replica on a CD.....those tapes are gettin' dusty....oh yeah, same as 3 years ago: I know I should, and i will probably be riddled w/guilt forever more, but I still can't sink my teeth into "I Still Love You".....maybe it has something to do with being personally introduced to the person it's about, I don't know.....just call me territorial about my friends :)!
I left out a couple recent tunes......"Peel Away" is really nice......I mean, REALLY nice, who's that singing with you on it? (send me performer credits, I hate guessing)..."Sarah's Desert" is really experimental, spacey.......I like it, but even if I didn't, it'd still be great just because it's the ballsiest thing you've ever commited to tape...."Intro/Outro".....made me want hot tea and a newspaper......(with no hint of the mayhem in between).....
So that's it, right? think I covered everything......overall, a cool disc....original, and with a barrage of things to grab attention.....gutars, guitars, guitars, moogmoogmoog, a synclavier or two, an unearthly female voice, and one massive gong......what more could I want? (it might sound sarcastic, but you know what I like......this is my kind of stuff)
