"does humor belong in music?"
i joke around almost constantly in my everyday life, and my music, taken by itself, doesn't always convey this. here's a letter to a work-mate at my job...
as far as humor goes, sometimes i feel silly....sometimes i don't. there are certain cuts that definitely have a tongue-in-cheek approach to them. "feel the bomb" is a perfect example. most of the time, the words, chords and arrangements come to me in a flash. i don't really craft them. they sort-of exist already. when they come to me, they're all finished. that's why the songs sound the way they sound. i let my stream-of-consciousness dictate the topicality and word-choices. if you ever see me play live, you'll see that even in the more "serious" songs, i deliver them with a fun-loving sensibility. i don't take myself too seriously. i love to share all of my musical and theatrical ideas with people without the ego getting in the way. that way, people see the real me up there, and not the "performing" erno. if you like me, you'll like my music. they're one in the same. i feel it's my duty to share the songs i write in the "purest" form possible. it would be sacrilegious for me to change lyrics to be more "funny" while i'm writing. that would be like a filter. people use too many filters, and their art is corrupted by greediness. i feel that what i do is pure artistic expression, untouched by business. i give my cd's away to people. one day, all of this energy will be rewarded in exposure and fame. for now, i just want to have everybody hear what art sounds like. does that sound snobbish???
thanks,
tom
