musical tirade
i don't know what caused me to write this...
with my music, i'm on a mission. since my childhood, i've watched television, radio, and news turn into stale, uncreative, and boring mediums. every sitcom looks the same. the shows have no personality to me. they are all just a bunch of hairdos to me. every show has a "kramer" type character. with radio, it's even worse. 99% of the groups on the radio right now won't be heard of this time next year. people are wondering why the music industry is in a slump...... because it's all pretty much throwaway garbage. in short, what were perfectly-mixed combinations of art and commerce have become just commerce. big business. u2 inc. pearl jam assoc. i'm on a mission. keep the f'ing business OUT of the mix altogether. i've written and recorded music uncompromised by business.
i write all different ways. sometimes, i feel like a love song.....sometimes, a pop song.....sometimes an instrumental. i find it easy to do this. and, to be honest, i'm finding a large audience hungry for variety and creativity. i'm filling a void. if every one of my songs were like the "fly a kite" song you liked so much, i would be lying to the people. i write 10 different ways, and i feel it's my spiritual duty to get those songs to the people in the purest forms. i'm not saying i'm jesus.......i'm just saying that what's available to the consumer nowadays is downright sacrilegious. where's the quality, long-lasting stuff??
to make matters worse, people are more willing to be led than ever. there was a time about 6 years ago where people took chances, and bought music to be challenged, or because they liked a cover. not anymore. we eat what we're fed. what's next???? are we going to be fed a dictator like hitler????? sorry for that last statement. it's just that i'm on a mission to stir imagination, so that people realize that art is not dead, and maybe THINK and TAKE CHANCES. anybody can turn their amps up and blast away some mediocre stuff. the truth is......volume covers up things lacking in songwriting and music. the new PUNK plays quietly when everyone else is loud. sorry for my tirade, but i feel better now.
i think that the more you listen to musical saw, the more you'll find yourself open to all of the different sounds and ideas it has to offer. you'll be on the subway humming "the ray" or "sleep on your side." i'm not saying that if you drink piss enough you'll like it... i'm saying that the songs have already invaded you, and you'll find yourself remembering them. i hope you don't think i'm weird for writing this. it's just that on-stage, all of this makes even more sense. you'll see how i can control a room with a whisper, where everyone stops talking, and is hanging on every word. i'd love for you to be there.
thanks for the feedback,
tom
