CORSA 2.0 16v TURBO DRAGSTER

CORSA 2.0 16v TURBO DRAGSTER

Project was started back in Nov '96. The idea was to make a super-hot Corsa dragster powered by an Opel 2 litre 16 valve turbo motor. The idea was to build something really special!

In June 1997 a complete 1 liter Corsa 3-door (imported from Spain and used as a training unit at the Struandale Production Plant, South Africa) together with a 2 litre 16 valve turbo engine assembly was donated to Jackie. Over the following 20 months, the vehicle was gradually built up into running form. It was decided stick to a transverse engine arrangement and front-wheel-drive in order to reduce complexity. The build was a very slow process since the project was run on an incredibly tight budget. Both members of the team funded any parts purchased.

Feb '99 the engine, powertrain, fuel system, suspension, brakes, seats & controls were all fitted & fully functional. The car was now ready for the engine conversion in order to boost the power. The standard turbo was removed & replaced with a Garret T4 together with a custom-built exhaust manifold & a 78mm exhaust. The intake manifold was also removed & replaced with a custom-built design. The intercooler & air filter together with all the boost pipes were fitted & several of the visual parts in the engine bay were powder-coated. A second set of fuel injectors was mounted on the intake manifold, powered by a secondary management system, supplying additional fuel to the engine at high boost levels in order to further increase the power and prevent lean conditions in the engine. All of this translates to over 270 kW on the wheels at 1.4 bar boost. Boost can be adjusted between 1 and 2 bar by means of a control knob mounted inside the car.

May '99 Quarter-mile time of 13.4 seconds & a terminal speed of 176 km/h. A week later, 12.9 seconds & 206 km/h! Both above runs were performed on standard 15" street tyres.

June '99 Some changes to the front suspension in order to further improve traction & control. Also, 16" Yokohama Touring Car slicks were fitted in place of the 15" street tyres. Quarter-mile time of 12.9 & an estimated terminal speed of 215 km/h.

Other achievements: 1. Terminal speeds of 188 kph over 400 meters & 226 kph over 800 meters. 2. 203 kph over 400 & 241 kph over 800m. Currently the record holders for both the 400 & 800m terminal speeds. Hold the 400m record at the Scribante Circuit (Port Elizabeth, South Africa) with a time of 12.6 seconds. Previous record was 12.8 seconds, which had stood for over 3 years. Fastest speed of the day over 400m with a speed of 197 kph in East London Nov '99.

All trophies have been 1st place. Overall 1st place in Class F (Open Class) for 1999 at the Algoa Motorsport Annual Prizegiving, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

What's Next?

The Corsa has since been broken down & the same engine is being out into a Corsa Pickup (just like mine!), but only rear wheel drive. It should be ready by mid 2002. Another addition will be a NOS kit, giving an extra 100kW, but do they really need it?

Well done Lads! All the hard work has and will pay off in the end.
