WHITCHURCH COMMON & KING'S TOR This is the view looking south east across Whitchurch Common to King's Tor in the distance. It is a good area for a hash with varied and interesting terrain. Below King's Tor there are disused granite quarries which are always an exciting place to run. In the foreground is a Dartmoor Pony, which is an officially recognized breed, the first mention of which was in a will from the year 1018. It is possible the breed is older than this and it has been suggested that it originated from stock brought to Britain by the Celts. The ponies, sheep and cattle which graze the moor today are all owned by farmers or people who have been granted grazing rights. Although Dartmoor is a wilderness area and National Park, it is not in public ownership. In fact, much of it is Duchy of Cornwall land, which means that the owner is Prince Charles.
