THE PLYM VALLEY

Plym valley JPEG

The valley of the River Plym is heavily wooded from the edge of Dartmoor all the way down to the city of Plymouth, a distance of approximately seven miles. Much of the land is owned by the National Trust which grants free access to the public, and there are also public footpaths and a cycle path which follows the route of the old disused railway line. The rocky buttress to the right of the picture is the Dewerstone, a popular place with rock climbers. In the woodland below lies Shaugh Bridge and further upstream is Cadover Bridge. At the top right corner can be seen Roborough Down, an open, relatively flat area of heathland, which is the first part of the moor you come to when driving out of Plymouth.
