BURRATOR DAM The picture shows the view across Burrator Reservoir and its dam to Lether Tor in the distance. The reservoir road which runs up the valley can just be glimpsed at the bottom of the picture. It crosses the dam and runs all the way around the outside of the reservoir, which makes access very easy. The reservoir area is an important recreation area for the people of Plymouth who use it to walk, run, cycle and hash. In the last few years the water company, South West Water, has come up with two different plans to restrict access to the reservoir, in an attempt to concentrate visitors at the dam area (where they could be charged for parking, refreshments etc.). Both schemes met with tremendous opposition from local people and were defeated. Nevertheless, it is important to remain vigilent - we must not lose free access to this wonderful recreational resource just because the water company wants to make money from selling ice creams!
