| The start
of the 50,000 mile circle was the American island
of Little Diomede in the the middle of the Bering
Strait - the stretch of water that separates
Russia from the USA. In the winter it is frozen
over and its possible to walk the land bridge
between these two superpower nations. On leaving
the island MP took a motor boat, but he laments
that the crew have taken the easy option...the
helicopter. |

The joys
of being a cameraman! How much would I love to
have been Nigel Meakin taking this shot of MP on
the beaches of Nome, Alaska. Close examine of
this quad bike ride in Episode 1 reveals that the
footage Nigel shot here was never even used!
|
| True to
his roots, MP and the crew always had time for
some truely comic moments. This scene was, again,
in Nome, Alaska when MP took a limo to the
airport. He climbs in only to be met by a limo
full of film cases and equipment. Watch the shot
carefully. As MP sits down he pushes his bag into
the carefully positioned flight cases, causing
them to collapse. |

 |
| Further
evidence of the amount of luggage that had to be
transported around the world was seen at
Anchorage airport, prior to the flight to
Petropavlovsk in Russia. Having missed the
Coastguard plane due to bad weather the crew took
the last Alaskan Airlines flight of the season.
They must have easily filled the hold with their
43 bags and tripod! |

This
picture, taken in the Kronotsky Reserve, shows
the dangerous vent of steam being produced by
Velican (The Giant), the biggest geyser in the
region. You can see MP sprawling backwards (far
left) as the steam rises. Clearly visible
(centre, white shirt) is Fraser with his boom. To
his right are Nigel and Stephen.
|
| The
voiceover with this piece of footage has always
amused me. MP states that they have been given
special permission to visit one of the most
inaccessible, remotest parts of Russia - the
Kamchatka region. As he says that they cross this
large bridge as if the region was well-populated
and easily accessible! |
