- Janey: "I love to dance."
- Janey: "Army bases are pretty dead, unless you're in the Army. So I always
had a lot of time to daydream, and my daydream was always the same--that some
day, I was going to get to Chicago, because that's where they make Dance TV."
- Lynne [as she changes her velcro school uniform on the bus]: "Velcro. Next to the Walkman and Tab, it is the coolest invention of
the 20th century."
- Drew: " 'Jeff Malene, Machinist'--I don't see it. 'Jeff Malene, Regular on
DTV'--oh it's there, in neon!"
- Ricki: "No matter how hard you try, you'll never be as good as me."
- Natalie [whilst trying to decide which outfit to wear from a massive motorised closet]: "Decisions are the worst."
- Mr. Glenn: "You're too young to go out at night, except for the occasional
supervised school activity."
-
[Janey is asking her father for permission to audition for DTV]
Col. Glenn: "When you're eighteen, then you're entitled to some night life.
Now we had a deal, remember?"
Janey: "We made a deal when I was seven and a half--night life was The Muppet
Show!"
- [Scene begins with Janey and Lynne walking out of a school building. We hear
only the end of their conversation]
Lynne: "So I said, 'Sister, please--anyone could have confused 'Hail Mary' with
'Proud Mary' and besides, I do a very good Tina Turner!' "
- Lynne [to Janey when trying to convince her to go to the DTV contest] "Do you do everything you're told?...oh, God. You do."
- [Jeff is pushing Drew's old, corroded, smoking, brown Mercedes until the
engine will start up]
Drew: "You don't understand that this car makes a statement."
Jeff: "Yeah, it says, 'Hi, I'm garbage.' "
-
[Drew sees a pretty girl walk by]
Drew: "Hey, beautiful, stop lookin', you found me!"
[Girl turns around. It is Maggie.]
Maggie: "Great!"
Jeff: "Nice goin', Drew. I always wanted you for a brother-in-law."
Drew: "She's a punk."
Maggie: "You really think I'm punk? Wow, that's outrageous! I mean, it's
not as cool as new wave, but it's a lot better than pre-teen!"
- [Janey and Lynne are in line for DTV auditions registration. Janey is
laughing and plundering in a bag Lynne is holding. Jeff begins speaking to a
girl standing behind Janey]
Jeff: "You don't remember me, do you? I haven't forgotten you, or that
smile."
[Janey looks up, thinks Jeff is talking to her. Jeff glances at Janey]
Janey: "Oh, God, I'm sorry. I'm not good with names, I must have forgotten
who you...wha-..."
[beautiful blonde girl behind Janey responds to Jeff]
Beautiful girl: "Jeff Malene. I'd given you up for dead."
Jeff [to Janey as he passes her]: "Nice uniform."
-
[Lynne steps up to get her contestant number for the DTV audition]
Lynne: "Hi, I'm Lynne Stone. My lucky number is twenty-one."
Lady handing out numbers: "Uh-huh. Next." [Lady hands her # 87]
Lynne [to Janey]: "I have a real way with authority figures."
- Drew: "I have exotic wheels myself."
Natalie: "What is it...a Scwhinn ten-speed?"
- Ira [when he combines Janey and Jeff to be dance partners]: "Oh, I like this. Sort of Rebel Without a Cause meets Sound of
Music...you're taking a fashion risk. I like that. Just don't do it on
camera."
- Lynne: "You know what's better than getting mad? Getting even."
- Maggie [about Drew]: "You know, last year I caught him undressing my Barbie doll."
- Jeff: "My sister dances with doors. She's the original slam dancer."
- Maggie: "Don't throw a mental, Dad."
- [Janey is trying to sneak out of choir practice. Lynne is creating a
distraction. She starts to sing]
Lynne: "Daaaaay-o! Day you say day you say da-a-ay-o!"
- [Jeff is talking on the phone with Janey and Maggie suddenly pulls on the
phone cord from her room. The phone flies out of Jeff's hands and he has to
cut off his conversation with Janey quickly]
Maggie: "Sorry, I needed the phone."
Jeff: "What for? Are the Cabbage Patch mothers having a PTA meeting?"
- Janey [about Jeff's dance moves] "Yeah. I saw that in three different videos and a Levi's commercial."
- Natalie: "Excuse me. Do either one of you have change for a twenty?"
Janey [sarcastically]: "Gosh, I don't have anything smaller than a fifty. Sorry."
- Lynne: "He's a guy and he's alive. What's there to hate?"
- Lynne: "Whenever I'm in a room with a guy, no matter who it is--a date my
dentist, anybody--I think, If we were the last two people on Earth, would I
puke if he kissed me?"
- [Zack has let Janey know via walkie-talkie that their Dad knows she skipped
choir practice. Lynne tries to take care of the situation, dragging Janey
inside, saying she overdid it at gymnastic tryouts. Janey's parents just
stare at Lynne]
Lynne: "She hyperventilated on the uneven parallel bars. She almost spun to
death. I had to *rip* her fingers off."
- [At the mall, Janey and Lynne run into Drew getting fitted for a tuxedo. He
is bragging about the party he is attending that night--Natalie's party.
Lynne, Janey, and Maggie run off with the invitation. When Drew tries to
follow, he gets stuck with a pin, yells, "Ow!"]
Tuxedo fitter: "You move, you bleed."
- Lynne [to the photocopiers]: "We need fifty of these [copies of Natalie's party
invitations] right away...there's a few people Natalie forgot to invite."
Janey: "Make it a hundred and fifty."
- Sister Sledge: "Stay away from him. He's a boy!"
-
[At The Court, Drew tells a girl named Tiffany that she'd be great at a game
called Tune in Tokyo. He explains that she must put her hands behind her head
and say, "beep, beep, beep..." and twist at the waist]
Drew: "Picture this: it's WWII and our ship is going down in the middle of
the Pacific and our only hope is the short wave radio.
[Drew puts his hands on Tiffany's breasts and twists them as if they were
radio knobs]
Drew: "Tune in, Tokyo! Tune in Tokyo!..."
[Tiffany hits him with her purse and stomps off]
- [At the court, Jeff leaves the dance floor to help out a friend and a huge guy
demands that Janey dance with him. Jeff walks up as Janey pulls her arm away
from the big guy]
Jeff: "Hey, pal. She's with me, OK?"
Big guy: "No, man, you're wrong. She's with me. Now beat it."
[big guy pushes Jeff]
Jeff: "OK. I don't want any trouble. I've got an idea. Let's flip for her,
OK?"
Big guy: "All right."
Janey: "Oh, this is great--what, you're gonna flip for me?!"
Jeff: "Heads or tails?"
Big guy: "Heads."
Jeff: "Heads?"
[Jeff tosses the coin into the air. As the big guy's eyes follow the coin,
Jeff punches him HARD, and the guy falls to the dance floor]
- [About a motorcycle.]
Janey: Is it safe?
Drew: It's the safest thing you'll ever have between your legs.
Janey: What?
Drew and Jeff: Nothing!
- Janey: "I can't believe in two weeks I'm gonna be dancing on DTV!...I bet I
get hit by a car."
- [Janey is startled by her Dad who has caught her up in the middle of the
night]
Mr. Glenn: "By the way, why aren't you in your PJs? It's after midnight."
Janey: "Um, I was dreaming that I was gonna be late for school, so I woke up
and I got dressed, and then I looked at the clock."
Mr. Glenn: "Yeah, but you wear a uniform to school, and that's not a
uniform."
Janey: "In my dream I went to public school."
- J.P. Sands [to Jeff after threatening him]: "By the way, if you'd like to come to my country club again, let
me know. I can always use a good caddy."
- Jeff [after being threatened by J.P. Sands]:
"God, you are so naive, Janey. You think we're gonna win this thing?"
- Zack: "When all hope is lost, call for reinforcements."
- [Lynne helps Janey sneak out of the house--they climb down on a rope. The
guard dogs, two Doberman pinchers, start barking and coming for them when they
make it to the ground. Lynne, with hairspray and a lighter, makes a makeshift
blowtorch and shoots fire at the dogs]
Lynne: "Eat flame, Bozo!"
- Jeff [trying to cover up Janey's absence from the studio, as the
competition is close to beginning]: "She's here. She's just...ah...meditating. She says it's like going
to another place."
- [On a bus on the way to the DTV finals, Lynne is putting Janey's lipstick on
her. The bus slams on breaks and Lynne falls forward, the lipstick smearing
the side of a young man's face]
Lynne : "It's a very good color for you."
- Ricki: "I lifted the music news to the level of art, and you are treating me
like cattle!"
Ira: "Moo, alright. Moo!"
- Man in traffic jam [as Janey and Lynne run across the cars in the
traffic jam to get to the studio] : "Get off my car!"
- Janey [to Jeff]: "I wanna win if you do."
- [Mr. Glenn is in the building where the DTV finals are being filmed, but he
doesn't know where the studio is. He walks past a sign that reads "Uncle
Woody's Woods--Now Taping Studio B." Three men dressed as a pig, a rooster,
and a wolf are standing near the sign]
Mr. Glenn: "Where's Dance TV?"
Wolf: "Get off my tail, butthead."
- Janey [to Jeff just before they go out to dance]: "Let's do it."
- [At a bar, Mr. Malene and his friends watch on TV as Jeff and Janey are
announced as the new DTV regulars]
Mr. Malene: "Everybody, drinks on the house!"
[someone pours a pitcher of beer over his head]
Mr. Malene: "It's on me!"
- Gary Woods: "Janey and Jeff are the new DTV regulars! ...And with new DTV
regulars, Miss DTV will have something to say about that. Now where is that
Ricki?
[pause] Where's Ricki? [pause] Ricki, this is not funny. This is live
TV...
[a horse whines offstage and a horse-drawn chariot makes its way on stage,
driven by Lynne, who is laughing. Lynne salutes. Gary looks shocked] "A new
Miss Dance TV!"
- [Natalie has lost the DTV finals and is complaining to Ben Wolpert, her
partner]
Natalie: "You almost dropped me during my lift, you distracted me during my
solo...
[in a whiny voice to her father]
...Daddy!"
J.P. Sands: "Why don't you shut up!"
