Black Heart
Real Name: Blackheart

Class: Demon

Occupation: demon; former ruler of "Hell"

Affiliations: Member of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle; former ally of the Grim Reaper; former agent of Mephisto

Scale of Operations: Multi-dimensional, now bonded to Earth at New York City's Hellfire Club

Powers: Blackheart is a mystical being possessing vast supernatural power that is apparently inherent within him.

He can use this magical energy for various effects, such as the augmentation of his own physical strength, levitation, teleportation, the projection of mystical energy as force blasts, invisibility, matter manipulation, image projection, size alteration of his body or other objects or beings, the creation of temporary interdimensional apertures, and so on.

Blackheart also possesses certain powers enabling him to capture and detain the astral bodies (sheaths of the soul) of recently deceased human beings. Blackheart does not have jurisdiction over all the souls of humanity's recently deceased. It is not yet known what the prerequisite conditions are for him to be able to manipulate a human soul, nor are the precise means by which he accomplishes the feat known. Apparently these conditions require that the human being in question willingly agree to submit to Blackheart's will. It is not known how a human being may free himself from bondage to Blackheart, nor whether Blackheart will forever retain control of the souls he has obtained. Nor is it known whether or not Blackheart "feeds" on the psychic energies of such souls as other demons do.

Blackheart can entrap a living human being within his realm through sheer physical force, even if the person did not submit his or her will to him.

As a demon, Blackheart is functionally immortal and beyond such human needs as food, air, and sleep. His body appears to be composed of some supernatural substance that is more durable and resilient than human flesh and tissue and is capable of feats of superhuman strength.

History: Blackheart is the "son" of Mephisto, the demonic ruler of a Hell-like netherworld. Blackheart usually appears as an entirely black, spine-covered humanoid creature with a 3' prehensile tail, although he is capable of altering his appearance and taking on human form. Blackheart gives off an unpleasant
burning odor mixed with the scent of roses and possesses no discernible heartbeat.

Although Mephisto claims Blackheart to be his son, Blackheart was not conceived through the normal biological procedure as human children; instead Blackheart's "birth" was triggered by a series of violent incidents that took place on a hill in the small city of Christ's Crown.

In 1658, a woman named Abigail Housman was brutally murdered on the Christ's Crown Hill. Her blood soaked the land for many hours before she was found, and a large murder of crows circled the spot around her dead body. The hill had since been considered to be a place of evil, and in the following centuries countless atrocities were reputed to have taken place on it. Due to inexplicable causes,
houses close to the hill never held tenants for long and were ultimately deserted.

Eventually, large, twisted, multi-thorn rose bushes with black trunks began to grow around the Christ's Crown Hill which in recent years had become a popular dare spot, a place to hold séances, and make out area by teenagers. However, each visit to the hill always seemed to result to more bloody tragedies.

Some time ago, a young man called Peter took his girlfriend Sarah on the top of the Christ's Crown Hill. When Sarah refused Peter's advances, he tried to force himself on his girlfriend. The violence and selfishness of this act was absorbed into the hill and united with the negative residual energy of all the other
atrocities that had ever been committed on the Christ's Crown Hill over the past centuries. This caused the negative energy to reach critical mass, resulting to a small explosion on the top of the hill. Part of the negative energy released in the explosion inexplicably managed to gain sentience, and physical form, becoming the creature that would later become known as Blackheart.

Acting on pure instinct, Blackheart slew Peter and Sarah. He was soon confronted by Mephisto who commented on his "son's" unimaginative kill, and how corrupting mortals is more rewarding than simply slaying them. Mephisto then began to tutor Blackheart in the "art" of planting the seeds of evil into the souls of innocents, and how evil is more powerful when it is never viewed in its true form. Mephisto also gave Blackheart his name.

Mephisto sent Blackheart in human form to New York City to find a heroic soul to corrupt. Blackheart's attention was soon attracted to the costumed crimefighter Daredevil. Assuming his true demonic form, Blackheart engaged Daredevil in combat, all the while attempting to goad Daredevil into killing him as the means to corrupting the crimefighter's soul. The fight was soon joined by the costumed adventurer Spider-Man who helped Daredevil fight off both Blackheart and the urge to kill the demon. Ultimately, realizing that a crowd of spectators was attracted to the fight and remembering Mephisto's lecture on how evil lost its power when others viewed its true form, Blackheart teleported away from prying eyes. Ashamed by his very existence, Blackheart returned to the place of his birth and re-immersed his form into the Christ's Crown Hill.

Nearly a month afterwards, Blackheart was found in Mephisto's realm where his "father" continued to tutor him in the more subtle ways to perpetuate evil through the corruption of innocence.

A more subtle and malevolent Blackheart was sent back to Earth by Mephisto to practice his ability to corrupt souls on Daredevil and his allies, the Inhumans Gorgon and Karnak, and the genetic construct Number Nine. However, despite his original seeming success, Blackheart was eventually thwarted in his attempts.

As time passed, Blackheart's consciousness began to evolve, and soon Blackheart had developed his own theories about evil, and an insatiable desire for power. On one occasion, Blackheart teamed up with the Grim Reaper, and tried to break Wonder Man's spirit. Blackheart intended to use the broken Wonder Man as the means with which to overthrow Mephisto, but he was defeated once again in the end. Still seeking to take control of his "father's" realm, Blackheart took control of the Christ's Crown City as part of a scheme to recruit the vigilantes Ghost Rider, the Punisher, and Wolverine into aiding him in destroying Mephisto. Blackheart offered the three adventurers their hearts' desires in return for their services, but he was forcefully turned down by his intended allies, and was forced to relinquish his hold over the Christ's Crown and its inhabitants.

Nonetheless Blackheart ultimately succeeded in slaying Mephisto by himself, and assumed control of his netherworld. Blackheart retained the throne to Mephisto's realm for a long period of time, until Mephisto's recent return to life. During his run as Hell's ruler, the bulk of Blackheart's machinations came to involve the Ghost Rider.

Most recently, Blackheart reascended as the Black King of the Hellfire Club's Inner Circle on behalf of the Circle's Black Queen, who wanted the Hellfire Club to become truly demonic in nature. Blackheart and the Queen clashed with the Fantastic Four, Margali Szardos, Daimon Hellstorm, and a mysterious new figure called the Mechamage. The Hellfire Club was defeated in that encounter, and Blackheart was mystically bound into the Club's basement where he remains imprisoned. Hellstrom then joined the Hellfire Club as its new White King as the means to balance the forces of good and evil in the Inner Circle.

DID YOU KNOW: Blackheart is the rebelious offspring of the demon, Mephisto.
