This is the earliest canal still in existance in America. Early in the 19th c. a new canal was constructed, joining the old one at the Duxbury line. The 17th c. canal can still be seen where a small bridge crosses it at the corner of Canal & Bay Streets in Marshfield, a winding watercourse about 1000 feet long, much narrowed over the years.
