514. John COFFEY

When John Coffey wrote his will in March 1774 he named his children; James, William,
John, Edmond, Thomas, Reuben, Benjamin, Winnifred Moran and Betty Fields. When
his estate was appraised some nineteen years later, Elizabeth and her "lawful
husband Thom. Fields" were named in the report of the appraisers. When
Elizabeth's nephew, applied for a pension as a veteran of the American Revolution,
Thomas Fields was named as his uncle by marriage.
Several of the Coffey men served in the Continental Amy during the American Revolution.
Two of the most interesting were Elizabeth Coffey's close kin. Before he was
eighteen years old, the previously mentioned Eli Coffey had served two three-month
terms of enlistment as a substitute, first for Thomas Fields and then for his
own brother, Ambrose, who was nearsighted. He went into service in behalf of
Thomas Fields because Thomas had a "large family dependent on his daily
labor for their subsistence". Eli survived the War and became a respected
citizen and a responsible member of the Yadkin Grove church.
Another of Elizabeth's relatives was Colonel Benjamin Cleveland, son of her aunt
Elizabeth Coffey Cleveland. He was married to Jane GRAVES in 1728 in (probably)
Essex County, Virginia.(235)
