What is DooM?

Oh just a 10-year old game (released in dec 1993) which shook the world and still has a dedicated community of people creating mods for it to this day. In fact some might argue theres more mods being made for the game now than there ever was, probably partly due to the announcement of DooM 3, and the fact modern FPS games are way too hard to create mods for

What sort of things will I need to play these games?

The mods I make are never intended to be run on the original DooM engine (well, you can try with bughunt!). ID software released the source code for doom in the late 90's, which lead to a number of "Source ports" being created. The only one causal gamers may have heard of is Zdoom, which is by far the most popular. My mods are mainly intended to run in two other ports though, Legacy ,which is quite similar to Zdoom (okay certain people will want to crucify me for that comment, but when you think about it from the perspective of a doom newbie, it is). And EDGE, which is a highly modified version of the doom engine which is almost completley different in a way, but this is useful because it allows for the use of DDF, which is a file that can be used with EDGE to create completley new monsters and weapons from scratch. In most other doom ports (yes, even Zdoom), you can only really modify the monsters and weapons which are already there, you cant, say, create another pistol which shoots lasers and is on the same 'slot' as the normal one..but in EDGE its easy!.

..Oh, and you'll also need the full WAD files doom.wad and doom2.wad, you can get these by buying the games (don’t ask for a place to download them, you wont get it, and it will get you banned from most of the doom commuity sites)

Why edit Doom? There are newer games

If you have to ask you'll never know, but youre proably too confused and want to know anyway, the simple answer is..cause its easy!, if you're not a modder for more modern games like half life yourself, shut the fuck up, you probably dont know how overwhelming those editors look like when you open them, so you cant dictate to me what i 'should' be making mods for. Also doom files tend to be much smaller than those for other games, one of the biggest doom wads ever, Eternal doom, is 18 megs, compare that to most 'small' half life addons. Also the doom community is not filled with "UR A FAG" idiots, and it has "The community archive" where you can upload files, instead of trying to put them on geocities or someplace that will delete them within hours
