DragonBall - It was a good series, more a humorous and playful series than an action one. Yes, there’s was fighting in it, but not many major battles. In the beginning it’s pretty much of a run on cartoon. (boy meets girl, ........girl tries to shoot boy with a hand gun, boy picks up girl’s car while girl is still in it, and throws it.) Very typical. They pretty much go around the world in search of dragonballs and meet people on the way. It was a good series but it didn’t really stand out from all the other anime cartoons.
J-Me happy

Dragonball Z - This was the series that brought all the popularity. It turned the simple humorous series Dragonball to an action packed, fighting till the death, phenomenon. Many started to watch this series and the popularity grew quickly. It was a very noble, breath taking, emotional series.(well in Japan it was) But, unfortunately, it was missing a plot, or that the plot was just the (strong fighter guy,......strong bad guy, strong bad guy threatens the planet or universe, Strong fighter guy beats up or kills strong bad guy, Strong fighter guy gets stronger.) Probably one of the reasons Akira couldn’t continue DBZ. Gokou became too strong (was the strongest in the universe). There was no one left to fight, and he just probably ran out of ideas for a stronger opponent to come by.

Dragonball GT - This was actually considered a disappointment. Many say that this series was made for a totally different audience. It evolves around Gokou, but mostly around his granddaughter Pan. The series goes back to the run on stage and doesn’t really have any major battles. On the last season though, Toei (a company that helped make DB/Z) decided to have some major battles. The series started to become action packed again, and it still evolved around Pan, who help Gokou reach Super Gokou 4. Unfortunately, the series had become so unpopular that GT didn’t last long. (only had about 64 episodes) DBGT wasn’t Akira’s creation, in fact, Toei asked permission from Mr. Toriyama if they can bring back Gokou and the gang, thus Toei created DBGT.

These are not the ratings in my opinion of how I liked each series, and they are not to be taken personally. In fact, these are mere assumptions of the series. I am not giving you facts that every one feels is true. Not all of Japan felt this way, in fact, a 'plethora' of people felt the opposite of how these ratings were graded. I cannot really back this hypothesis up to make it a fact. I did not interview people or record each individual that watched a series. I merely went by other sites' information to make these hypothesises. So let us put it this way for short-These might not be 100% true, this was based on other sites' info of each series, and this should not be taken 'too' seriously. (hey this shouldn't be taken seriously at all because its only a animated series.)
