Gas Tank Removal
The gas tank must be removed in order for the sections
of trunk floor to be replaced, and every car that has been sitting for
a considerable period of time must have the tank thoroughly cleaned or
replaced. I hate to disappoint, but I don't have any pictures yet.
However, it is a fairly straightforward process:
-
First, disconnect the filler tube. This is easily accomplished
by loosening the clamps between the filler and tank. Make sure to
loosen them up enough so they can be moved around freely so as to make
sure they don't get in the way. Next, pull out the filler tube.
If it gives you trouble, use a flathead screwdriver to pry against the
rubber part of the tubing. Easy as that.
-
Next, unscrew all the bolts retaining the tank to the trunk.
These run all the way around the perimeter of the tank. They are
easily accessible, but I had to drill half of them out because the heads
on the bolts were so distorted. If this is the case, get a drill
bit a bit smaller than the hole the bolts are in and drill through the
tops of the actual bolts. Once you see daylight, you know you are
there.
-
That is pretty much it, it is a pretty easy task. Remember
to disconnect the fuel line on the bottom of the tank before ripping it
out, though. I haven't gotten quite that far yet, so the play-by-play
of that will have to wait.
-
My tank is about ready to come out, but I'm gonna leave it
in until I get ready to replace the trunk floor. I am still torn
on whether or not to get a fuel cell. So tempting... we'll see.
