Homeless Veterans
About one-third of the adult homeless population have served their country in the the Armed Services. On any given day, as many as 250,000 veterans are living on the streets or in shelters, and perhaps twice as many experience homelessness at some point during the course of a year. Many other veterans are considered near homeless or at risk because of their poverty, lack of support from family and friends, and dismal living conditions in cheap hotels or in overcrowded or substandard housing.
It is unimaginable how we can let these men and women who so proudly fought to preserve our way of life lead a life of their own that is sub-standard to what they fought to protect. The next time you see a homeless person holding a sign that says 'Veteran will work for food', understand that there is over a 30% chance that he or she is a veteran and that they have already worked for food. They have already worked for shelter. They have already worked for dignity and self worth. So take a minute out of your busy schedule and provide a little help. If you don't feel comfortable helping them financially, simply talk to them....you may have served in the same unit!!! They may have served with your dad, they may have served with your son or daughter....but they have definitely served you, me and their country. Try serving back a little...it will make you feel terrific.
