Time for the News
Time for the News
by June Ball
The babies are asleep, the diapers washed, the dishes done.
In Vietnam there is a bright sun.
Instant videos of Dan Rather's views;
Turn off cartoons, it's time for the news.
Vicki Carr sings on a Christmas show,
a Bob Hope special, with the USO.
There's shooting today, we get Dan Rather's views;
I see it on the evening news.
He isn't there but I watch anyway;
The children are tired from a day of play.
They're too young to see those TV views;
I cry when I watch the evening news.
I just got a letter, everything is okay.
Kiss the girls for me, honey, a gift's on the way,
Tomorrow to Saigon to buy you a dress.
No worry tonight, no bad news in the press.
The telegram said: "we regret to inform you."
He promised to be careful, it can't be true.
Tet started with terrible views.
Tonight, I don't watch the evening news.
I hope to hear something;
The phone doesn't ring.
TV full of protesters with anti-war views;
I anxiously watch the evening news.
My one friend left who will talk to me,
Her husband's in Vietnam too, you see,
Says no one wants to hear our views.
We both tearfully watch the evening news.
You wish you knew something, is he dead or alive?
Unknowing agony.
Will my child, almost five, remember her daddy?
And the one in her two's?
See me cry, watching the evening news.
