Because You Love Me

"But what I can't understand is why you left then." Christina McKennan asked Brian Wallingford, her classmate in college. "You talk about her like she's the entire world to you." She continued.
The two knew each other for over a year now, being in the same program at the college. They weren't dating, she already had a steady boyfriend who was thinking of marriage. Some time after the incident with Jessica Staten, Brian had left for school to make something of himself, to finally gain a career where he wouldn't waste his life away like he did in the past. Along with his leaving the city, he knew he'd be leaving his love for Jessica too, or so he thought. It was in the winter when thoughts of her and them together really tore at his mind, mostly because it was nearing her birthday and he only wished he could be there.

"That nearly hit me Hun, what are ya trying to do here?" Brian proclaimed when the snowball Jessica launched at him whisked past his arm. The late evening snowfall made for a great snowball fight and its dampness made it all the better. They were fooling around, enjoying the winter weather, being together making all the worlds hassles go away for another time. Nothing was going to stop these two lovers from enjoying each others company. Jessica looked at him half innocently.
"I wasn't gonna hit you." She began to laugh and reached for more snow.
"Yeah...Right." Brian said then took off running after her. Within seconds he was on her and heaved themselves into a bank with a soft thump. She kissed him.

Those thoughts were many and almost every one of them brought him to tears. He always said to himself that he missed her and often daydreamed of her. "I shouldn't have left."
"But look at what you're doing now." Christina said reassuringly. "You're going somewhere so that you two can be happier together afterward right?" He looked up at her and half smiled. "I mean you're still going through with that plan right? It's a great one, don't ever give that up Brian."
Brian picked up his shoulders, took a deep breath and said, "Yes I still want that dream to come true. It will, as long as she still wants it."
"But if she still loves you like you love her then it shouldn't be a problem." He laughed lightly.
"No, it will happen, just like we want it. Heh, I can still remember the night I explained it all to her, she took me by surprise when she told me she was interested in law too."
Brian and Christina walked into the cafeteria for lunch, he was trying to pay for her meal but she wouldn't let him, he blamed the 90s with a laugh. "I can picture her face in front of me without closing my eyes, looking into her eyes, seeing her smile, everything, like she's here now, you know?" Christina nodded.

Brian was leaving his friend's place for the night and he and Jessica were alone, formal goodbyes and what not. They hated this moment but just held each other, holding for eternity, not letting go, yet they had to. She looked up at him sweetly, "Brian?" She was hesitant at first but got the question out. "Do you love me?"
He was utterly speechless. He had not heard a girl ask him that question in years. Its warm tone touched him deeply. He smiles and leaned to kiss her and whispered, "Yes Jessica Staten, I love you." She held him tighter and locked themselves in a loving embrace.
After five minutes or so, they let go and caught their breath blushing, she let out a tiny laugh, "Want your breath back?"
He nodded trying to catch his breath again.
"Not unless you give me back what you took from me." He looked puzzled. She pointed to his chest and said, "My heart."
He looked at her again and smiled warmly. "And you ask me if I love you, do you blame me?"
"Before you go Brian there's something special I want to tell you." He listened. "I want you to know that you've changed my life so much, you've given me new hopes and magnificent dreams. You mean so much to me, I can't begin to describe it all."
He held her at arms length. Again he could not say a word, not for lack of trying though. Her words were a warm sensation inside of him, he never thought he could make someone feel like this but he sure was happy to know this.
She continued, "I do know one thing Brian," She took a breath and smiled. "This is how I feel now," She touched his face tenderly nearly making him fall backward but he stood strong.

  "Because you love me."
