A summer day with Dermo and Wil

Wil and Paul made their way back to their private apartment block after spending a day on Bondi Beach. They’d spent the day swimming, surfing, laying in the sun, and just generally enjoying each other’s company. It was the summer of 1999, and Wil was staying with Paul for a while.

Paul opened the door of the apartment and walked in, pulling off his t-shirt on the way. It was about 35 degrees outside; he wondered why he’d bothered to wear one at all. Then he remembered he’d put it back on because of the group of giggling teenage girls on the beach who felt the need to stare and point at him.

He was self-conscious enough about his body without having to deal with that and it didn’t help when photographs of him shirtless showed up in magazines or on the Internet. He knew he was an attractive guy for 37 but there were some things that people just didn’t need to see.

“Want a beer, Wil?”

“Yeah thanks.”

Wil closed the front door behind him and sat down on the couch. Paul came back in a few minutes later with two cold beers. He sat down on the couch too and handed a can to Wil. They both sat in silence drinking. When he’d finished his beer Paul got to his feet, reaching up to slide a hand through his sweaty hair.

“I’m going to go take a nice cold shower.”

Wil looked up and smiled.

“Need any help?”

Paul smirked.

“You offering to wash my back?”

“On second thoughts I think I’ll just stay right here.”

Paul laughed and headed towards the bathroom, pulling off his board shorts on the way and throwing them at the back of Wil’s head.

“Don’t be cheeky monkey boy or I’ll come in there after you!”

Paul just laughed again and went into the bathroom. Wil stayed sitting on the couch, thinking about just how much he would like to go in there and wash Paul’s back and any other part he wanted.

After a while he got up and wandered into his bedroom, lying down on the bed. He reached over onto the bedside table and grabbed his journal and a pen. He still felt strange sometimes about writing all his feelings down in some book, but it really did help. He didn’t realize Paul was out of the shower until there was a knock on the doorframe.

“You okay Wil?”

Wil looked up and caught his breath when he saw Paul standing there wearing just a very small towel around his waist. He tried his best to smile.

“Yeah just thought I’d catch up on some reading. It’s too damn hot to do anything else.”

“Go take a cold shower. It helps, believe me. I’m gonna go and get dressed.”

“Okay thanks.”

Paul smiled and then disappeared into his own room. A few seconds later Wil heard a shout.

“Who’s been sleeping in my bed?”

He jumped up and ran into Paul’s room.

“Oh sorry mate. You were staying at Richard’s last night so I came in here to sleep. It’s a lot cooler in your room.”

“Yeah I know. You can sleep in here again tonight if you’d like.”

“Where will you sleep?”

“It’s a double bed mate.”

Wil knew that he was blushing.

“Um, I’m going to take that cold shower now.”

He basically sprinted from Paul’s room into the bathroom. He needed a cold shower for more than one reason at that moment.

Wil wandered out of the bathroom wearing just a pair of long black cargo shorts.

”Paul?”

“I’m in the kitchen! You want some ice cream?”

Wil walked into the kitchen and saw Paul leaning over the kitchen bench. He had two big bowls out and the bench had ice cream, bananas, chocolate sauce and whipped cream. Wil smiled.

“Definitely!”

“Here you can make up your own.”

They set out making the two biggest ice cream sundaes ever seen. When he had finished putting on the whipped cream Paul turned and sprayed some on Wil’s chest causing him to jump.

”Hey!”

Paul giggled.

“That’s it, you’re in trouble now monkey boy!”

Wil squirted the whipped cream all over Paul’s face and down his chest, causing Paul to scream and squirt his own can back at Wil. Paul grabbed the chocolate sauce as well and began squirting that as well. They eventually both fell to the floor laughing uncontrollably. Paul propped himself up on one elbow and looked down at Wil with a smile on his face.

“What are you smiling at McDermott?”

“Nothing. I was just thinking you look pretty damn tasty.”

“I think you need to get cooled down Pauly.”

Before Paul could stop him, Wil had grabbed the waistband of Paul’s shorts and squirted whipped cream into them. Paul screamed again and jumped up.

“Ahhh you cheeky bastard!”

By now Wil was rolling around on the floor laughing his head off. But he stopped laughing when he Paul stripped off his own shorts so that he was standing there naked. Wil smiled and got to his knees licking his lips.

“Um Paul, you have some whipped cream on your pubes.”
