Subject: Coulter Repeats as Maryland Medallion Champ
Date: 05/07/2000
Author: Alan & Erin Williams <williams5@mindspring.com>

Chip Coulter didn't drop a game until the final in repeating as Maryland Medallion Champion, 5/6/2000.  Only Alex Meleshenko nicked the
Seemiller-style Pennsylvanian by taking the first game of the final.

More complete descriptions and accounts to follow....

A few highlights:  Robert Trudell amazed us by coming from Arizona to settle an old wager!  His generousity is unparalled, leaving behind a dry ice cooler of tamales, salsa, cacti, teeshirts and an appearance in our Quarterfinal.  Western Maryland's Mike Zheng, a truly nasty lefty penholder and Frostburg restauranteur put the quietus on Robert's Title dreams.  Frostburg by way of Shanghai....

All 3 of the WMTTC's 'big guns', Dave Williams, Alex Gao and Mike Zheng made the SE bracket from the three Giant RRs.  'Lefty' went out in three games to the newest USATT member, Arimdan DasAlex Gao was toasted by defending champ Chip Coulter, 9,9.  Zheng scraped by Maryland ex-patriate Jonathan Wilhelm in three Hard-Fought games, bested Trudell in the Quarters, and was eliminated in the Semi-Final by Alex Meleschenko.

John R. Miller of Texas and Trudell are both expected at next weekend's Eatern Open, as is Venezualan Exchange student and Frostburg's Darling Ina MontanoIna is 18 years old, an estimated 1500, and took Coulter into a Duece game with a relentless attacking Backhand in their RR encounter.

Julian Waters had  a 'hard luck' tournament, being rematched with Ken Roskos i the QFs.  Roskos dropped the first, but stormed back to win 17 and 8.  Waters was a gentleman in defeat, but obviously disappointed at not making the title match in the tournament he helped design three years ago and which he tirelessly promotes.

Potomac, MD's Charles FAn was the youngest SE participant, narrowly edging out Leo Saubier for a seed.

All in all , 29 pongers waged war for 7 hours, bopped to Elton JOhn and emoted to 'The Natural' as the Medallion completed it's third straight year of play.

For his Championship, Coulter waltzed off with $200 and a gorgeous chronometer in a wooden box bearing the Maryland State Seal , pedestal mounted on a  three-legged hardwood end table.

From the Third Annual Maryland Medallion....

Here's USATT newcomer Arindas Das http://www.totaladventure.com/Das.jpg
From Bengal, India, working in Pittsburgh, Arindas finished 7-2 in Group
Two, barely dropping a match to perennial power Julian Waters and upsetting
his group's top seed and eventual semi-finalist Ken Roskos. Arindas fell to
two-time winner Chip Coulter in the quarters of single elimination, but not
before he won a crowd pleasing round of 16 three game encounter over home
boy Dave Williams. http://www.totaladventure.com/Leftyblock.jpg

Winner Chip Coulter is now 24-1 over two years at the Maryland Medallion and
is running out of room to sign his name under Table One.
http://www.totaladventure.com/Coulter.jpg But, on the horizon, look for
this face at upcoming events, Frostburg, Maryland restauranteur (by way of
Shanghai) Mike Zheng. Mike reached the semi-finals, downed Arizona's good
will abassador Rob Trudell (a 320 point upset over the Group Two top seed),
going 10-2 on the day, and losing only to the two finalists.

A good time was had by all.
