Garlic Jr.has escaped from the Dead Zone where he was sent by Gohan a few years earlier, and he wants revenge. He and his gang, the Spice Boys, take over Kamis' Sky Palace and imprison Kami and Mr. Po Po. His next target is Earth. Using the Black Water Mist, Garlic Jr. changes all the life on Earth into mindless, blood drinking, violent creatures. The only people to escape the black mist are Krillin, his new girlfriend Marron (who wins the prize for the DBZ character with the smallest brain), Gohan and his dragon Iccarus, and Piccolo. Realising they have to save Kami, and find the antidote to the black mist, Krillin, Gohan and the dingy Marron, head for the Sky Palace. Piccolo is left to face the Spice Boys and now vicious Yamcha, Bulma and Chi Chi. He's bitten, and becomes infected with the Black Water Mist.
Krillin and Gohan get to the Sky Palace and are greeted by Garlic Jr. and his new body guard...Piccolo!
Gohan must fight his friend and teacher, but his spirit isn't in it, and Piccolo trounces Gohan. Krillin is kept busy with the Spice Boys, but is hard pressed to get the upper hand. Eventually, Gohan gets mad enough that he kills two of the Spice Boys, and things start looking better, until Krillin is bitten by Piccolo. Now having to fight two of his friends, Gohans will to win gets weaker, but unbeknowst to him, Piccolo and Krillin are only pretending to be Garlics' slaves, it's an elaborate ploy by Piccolo to rescue Kami and Po Po from their bottled prisons. With Kami and Po Po free, they head to the innermost area of the floating palace to spread the antidote White Water Mist over the Earth, thereby saving all life. Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin are left to battle Garlic Jr., who thanks to the Makeo Star, is at the most powerful he's ever been. He opens another portal to the Dead Zone intending to suck Gohan and everything else into it. But, just as he had before, Gohan resists and using his incredible powers, knocks Garlic Jr. into his own trap and destroys the Makeo Star so that Garlic. Jr. can never escape again.
It's all quiet again on Earth. Bulma and Yamcha are eating lunch when Dr. Briefs remarks that Vegetas' ship should be running out of fuel. Sure enough, the #3 Capsule Corps. ship plummets back to Earth and crashes into the compound. Vegeta emerges and asks if Goku has come back yet. He's told no. Bulma proceeds to tell him he stinks and to take a shower. A now squeeky clean Vegeta, in a pink shirt and ugly green pants, begins to rant about the earthlings fashion sense, but he's interrupted when a familiar feeling overwhelms him. It's Freiza! Incredibly, the maniacal alien is still alive and heading for Earth. All over the planet, all the Z fighters sense Freizas' approach. They rush off to gather at the spot where they feel he will land and begin arguing over their next course of action. They're argument is cut short when they sense another power even bigger than Freizas'!
A huge battle errupts in the direction of Freizas' ship, and the Z fighters rush to the scene. When they get there, they find a young man standing amid the carnage of what used to be Freiza and his father King Colds's ship. Both tyrants have been utterly destroyed. The young man assures them he's not an enemy and tells them Goku will be arriving in a few minutes and that they should wait. Sure enough, Goku returns and is surprised to see everyone there waiting on him. The young man asks to speak to Goku alone and they go off a short distance. He tells Goku that his name is Trunks, and he's from the future. He goes on to tell him that he's the son of Vegeta and Bulma and that he will be born in two years time. Goku is not only amazed at the news, he laughs hystericly at the thought of Vegeta and Bulma together. Trunks continues his story by saying that in three years time, two androids created by Dr. Gero will kill all of the Z fighters except for Goku, who dies of a heart virus, and Gohan who somehow survives the battle. Trunks gives Goku the antidote to the virus in hopes that with Goku, history will change and the androids will be destroyed. Trunks tells them he'll be back in three years and to meet at South City. That's where the androids make their first strike. Then Trunks returns to the future.
Our heroes prepare for the future that Trunks warned them about. Three years remain before the coming of the Androids that were said to wreck the future...
After years of anguish from a defeat that took place decades ago, Dr. Gero continues to plot revenge against the character who destroyed Red Ribbon and ruined him...Gokou. Everyone is training to get ready for the Androids that Trunks warned them about. Gohan, Gokou, and Piccolo train in the mountains. While Vegeta trains himself under 450 times the gravity of Earth in the gravity chamber of Capsule 3, keeping in mind that his main goal is to get stronger than Gokou. Yamcha, Krillin, Tien, and Chow Soo also undergo rigorous training to prepare for the future.
Three years pass...
Gokou, Gohan, and Piccolo fly to South City 90 km away from where Trunks appeared to regroup with the others. They encounter Krillin on the way and everyone lands to meet with Yamcha and Tein (Chow Soo was left behind because he wasn't strong to be of any use in fighing.) Bulma is also there holding a baby, who's introduced as her child, Trunks. Bulma tells them that she is there to see what the Androids look like. Everyone except Gokou and Piccolo is startled that the baby is Vegetas' son. Everyone looks at the city below the cliff in which they stand on but see no sign of the Androids.
The Z Warriors separate to investigate the city.
Two mysterious figurs, Androids 19 and 20 jump around the city killing the people they pass by. Yamcha unknowingly encounters the strange figures in his search for the androids. Android 20 grabs Yamcha by the mouth, stealing his energy, and jabs a hand through him. The others sense Yamcha's danger and arrive to the scene. Krillin takes Yamcha's body back to Bulma for a senzu bean. Gokou, Tien, Piccolo, and the Androids fly off to a more deserted area to protect the people that are left in the destroyed South City.
Android 20 wants to stop at Stone Mountain. Piccolo sees it as the androids' advantage for fighting because they can hide in the mountain mazes if they lose the battle. Gokou and Android 19 battle first. Gokou has the advantage, but doesn't do too well even at Super Saiyan level.
Yamcha is revived with a senzu bean. He tells Bulma, Gohan and Krillin that the androids have the ability to absorb energy. Gohan, Krillin, and Yamcha then go to warn their comrades of this fact. Android 19 absorbs part of Gokou's energy via Gokous' Kamehameha before he is warned of the androids' ability. Gokou suddenly suffers from heart failure and collapses. Android 19 beats Gokou around and then begins to absorb his remaining energy.
Vegeta leaps in to save Gokou, saying that it will be he who is to be the one to defeat Kakarot. To everyone's surprise, Vegeta powers up into Super Saiyan mode. He tells how during training, he realised that his training methods were not going to be good enough to defeat Gokou, so he got angry and turned into a Super Saiyan. Yamcha takes Gokou back to Master Roshi's place to recover. Vegeta beats Android 19 and purposely lets him steal some of his energy. Then, he kills the android. Android 20 watches and realises how he miscalculated the power levels of the Z Warriors. Thinking that he will lose to Vegeta, Android 20 runs away. Vegeta demands a senzu bean to restore his energy then goes in pursuit of Android 20. The rest of the gang follows.
Trunks returns from the future and looks for the Z Warriors. Seeing the decapitulated head of Android 19, he realizes that the Z Warriors were fighting the wrong androids.
Android 20 sees that he's been surrounded and makes a move to absorb Piccolo's energy. Gohan comes and saves him, and Piccolo is restored back to full energy with a senzu bean. Android 20 is surrounded again and is about to be killed. Trunks also arrives to the scene, saying that Androids 19 and 20 are not the ones that will terrorize the future. Bulma flies in with baby Trunks and Yajirobe. Android 20 shatters the ship with a fireball to create a diversion so he can escape.
Trunks rescues his mother and his baby self. Bulma tells them the identity of the android she saw. Android 20 is really Dr. Gero. Trunks says that Androids 19 and 20 are the wrong set of androids to fight. Androids 17 and 18 are the real targets, but are not yet awakened. Gohan carries Bulma, baby Trunks, and Yajirobe back home, and to check on his dad. Everyone else flies off to destroy Dr. Gero's lab before Androids 17 and 18 can be unleashed. Dr. Gero realizes this plan and also races towards his lab.
Dr. Gero, knowing the hidden location of his lab, gets to it faster than the Z Warriors. The Z Warriors catch up, but by the time they reach the lab Androids 17 and 18 have already been released. Everyone watches the androids. Androids 17 and 18 make a mess of their creator's laboratory and then Android 17 slices Dr. Gero's head off before crushing it. Androids 17 and 18 also head to the pod of another android and release him, Android 16.
Vegeta challenges the androids but before they can respond, Trunks blasts the lab into dust. The androids are undamaged and they turn and fly off. Vegeta races after them and once he catches up he challenges them again. Android 18 takes him up on his offer, and after playing a short game of tag, she finally shows the Super Saiyjin With The Overinflated Ego just who's boss. Needless to say...Vegeta gets his butt kicked bad. The rest of the Z Warriors arrive in time to see Vegeta humiliated, but they too are soon the targets and are beaten just as badly. The androids tire of their game, and decide to leave, saying they'll fight the warriors again once they've gotten stronger.
