In 1967, Barbie® received a fresh new look with the introduction of the Twist 'n Turn doll. In addition to her new moves, she sported an expressive youthful face with parted lips (as though she were talking) and a perky little nose. This face mold remained in use until the mid-1970s, when Barbie® had her disco makeover. Although not used as often as some of the other face molds, the TNT face is actually quite versatile. She can be made to keep her original demure girl-next-door sweetness, or to look haughty and striking. TNTs are also relatively easy to find and are often quite inexpensive, especially the lovely pink-skinned Ballerinas from the 1970s. Many Ballerinas and Quick Curl Barbies have experienced a few too many bad hair days, and may require reroots (as you can see below, the majority of these dolls have had hair replacement therapy). Mattel has recently brought back this face mold in its series of reproduction dolls, and for a higher price, dolls with shiny, thick hair can be found as well. Below is a selection of TNT repaints by some wonderfully talented artists.
