NECROPHAGIST.  Another crappy Death Grind band clogging the arteries of the metal community with decaying globs of festering demonic cholesterol, right?  Completely wrong.  This is no CANNIBAL CORPSE.  Onset of Putrefaction is an incredibly catchy and complex slab of wonderful Technical Death Metal.  The balance of intricate song structures and catchiness inherent to the tracks on this disc is virtually unparalleled in this musical style.  Only the mighty SCEPTIC comes to mind as a rival worthy of competing with NECROPHAGIST with respect to this specific mix of qualities.

NECROPHAGIST is even more amazing when you consider that Onset of Putrefaction is the product of one man's efforts!  Muhammed Suicmez performed all of the guitar, bass, and vocals himself, and he programmed the drumming.  The awesome interplay of chunky riffage and constant soloing is reminiscent of some of the giants of the Technical Metal genre, particularly early CORONER and latter day DEATH.  However, NECROPHAGIST really carves their own niche into the heart of the rotting corpse of the metal scene.  The drum programming is done very well (the drums sound quite natural for the most part), and the many fills and complex rhythmic patterns add another dimension to the intricacy of the band's sound.  The vocals are in the typical Death Grind style, so they don't so much for me, but they don't detract from my enjoyment of the music.

I do not feel a need to discuss specific songs, because all of them kick ass.  Don't shy away from the CD due to stupid song titles such as "Mutilate the Stillborn" and "Advanced Corpse Tumor".  This is not exactly the type of CD you sing along to anyway.  Besides the obvious shortcomings due to the Death Grind influence, the only drawback to Onset of Putrefaction is that it is only about 35 minutes in length.  I guess some of the songs sound somewhat similar to one another, but that is not a major concern for me when the music is of such high quality.

I strongly encourage all fans of Technical Death Metal to check out this incredible German band.  You can find out more about them on their webpage at http://www.necrophagist.de/
