Being blown
away by MARTYR's first album, I was more than ready to dive right into
Warp Zone. What I found most surprising about this
follow-up is that is little more than a continuation of the previous release,
right down to the haunting opening which the last album closed with.
The notable improvement here however, is the improved production which
offers more clarity and heaviness across the board. Nothing has changed
in the band's style or songwriting ideology. Again, expect to be
caught in a savage whirlwind of blindingly technical rhythms and trapped
in a vortex of slashing drums and aggravated vocals. The intensity level
is up a bit as well on Warp Zone which makes this just as
killer a release as the band's debut. The varied tempos and myriad
of time and riff changes make this a listening experience that will last
months if not years! Every time I spin this disc I swear I hear a
new riff I'd overlooked before and that's not hard to comprehend since
this is a riff-o-ramatic storm of incredible proportions. The band
pack in so many hooks you'd swear you were trapped in a giant tackle box.
The band infuse elements of Jazz into various nooks on the album but the
overall direction of the album is purely Thrashy, Deathly, and Technically
insane Metal. Godly is word that comes to mind.
MARTYR are the embodiment
of Technical Death/Thrash and as of this point in the history of Metal,
I can't think of a more potent band delivering this type of high-caliber,
high-quality style. MARTYR join the ranks of other legends like early
PESTILENCE who were true pioneers in this art. MARTYR, if they ever
get the the recognition they so duly deserve, will be revered across the
underground scene. I can only hope they stick together for many years
and continue to create more of this high-intensity music. Warp
Zone just plain rules and ranks as one of the finest recordings
of its kind ever and a brutally efficient follow-up to their freshman effort.
