“It is first light on the 6th of June, 1944, D-Day. On this day, the Allies launched the largest combined land, air, and sea operation ever from Southern England to liberate Europe from Hitler and Nazi oppression. “The Screen magazine was a biweekly news and information film that was shown before the featured film in all military motion picture theaters during World War II. Most of the shows consisted of a group of five minute segments featuring human interest stories about the home front, updates from the defense industry, news about major combat events of the war, an animated cartoon (Private Snafu) and sometimes a variety show featuring some of the top entertainers of the day. The most popular feature of the screen magazine was the Private Snafu segments, created by Theodore ‘Dr. Suess’ Geisel and animated by Warner Brothers. Snafu was lazy, stubborn, unpatriotic, and insisted doing everything wrong. In the end, Snafu learned the hard way, but not before supplying his audience with five minutes of laughter and a painlessly administered object-lesson. By the end of the war, the Army-Navy Screen Magazine reached a weekly audience of over 4 million men and women. Although the magazine was an instrument of official policy, its honest, no-nonsense approach won the respect and affection of GI audiences everywhere.”

“The Cold War of the 1950’s resulted in many television programs produced by government and industry to promote their own interests. No such series had a long a run or was as well received by the viewer’s as the U.S. Army’s Big Picture series. From 1951 through 1964, in syndication or on the ABC television network, these programs presented straight documentary films produced by the Army Pictorial Center. “Our war saga begins in 1914. The world was dominated by the European powers. When the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary was assassinated, it touched off a catastrophic conflict. Attempts to break the deadlock by frontal assaults led to enormous casualties and the developement of new, more horrofic weapons. On the battlefield, machine guns, massed artillery, gas and the introductin of the tank gave the ear a new dimension. In the air, the advent of the bomber brought civilians face-to-face with the realities of a modern war. At sea, the submarine disrupted shipping and put entire countries in peril.
