The "Raggedy Assed" Marines Are On Parade
by Lawrence G. Means
8 1/2 x 11 inches, Softcover (plastic spine) - $17.95
217 pages

..."Let me take you on a brief journey...a journey back through time and space...a journey that culminates on a remote 30 x 90 mile long mountainous, jungle-covered tropical island thousands of miles from America in the far reaches of the South Pacific, an island which, in the black of the Melanesian night, is crowned by a jeweled constellation known as "The Southern Cross".
It is a journey that briefly describes the First Marine Division's first blooding in the longest sustained combat action any marine divsion was to encounter during World War II. And it is also a journey that brings to life the ensuing 'tooth rattling" contest with the Empire of Japan on and around that accused island on which world attention was focused during the 6 month long epic struggle, the first offensive action against the Japanese (and by extension, against any of the Axis forces), by a division size American ground force in World War II. The island's name? GUADACANAL! Likewise this book also traces the ancestry of the First Marine Division, and a history of the entire Corps right up to the Gulf War. For sure, you'll be better informed, and even prouder of your Corps once you've read it!

..."Ever since the American invasion of Japanese occupied Guadalcanal (August 7, 1842), I have been fascinated by the island itself, by the region as well as the details of the various battles both on land and sea. In 1997 a chance opportunity allowed me to travel to the Solomon Islands (along with my brother who had been with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines on the initial invasion). The trip, arranged by Military Historical Tours Inc., included visiting various battle sites along with the chance to talk with local citizens as well as Australian & New Zealand expatriots. This then is my adventure, brimming with many beautiful photographs of past & present day Guadalcanal, leavened with history, fact, and and legends about this unique island encounter.
About The Author
Lawrence G. Means is a World War II Marine (and Army Veteran of the Korean War), and has long had a special regard for the U.S. Marine Corps; a respect that ultimately motivated him to assemble a unique book which would be educational, pride inducing, and a source of unusual information for former Marines (those unsung mudpounders who made major contributions to, took the brunt of, and endured most of the hardships which ultimately led to victory), as well as for their families. Mr. Means is also a family man, and resides in the beautiful Pacific NorthWest with his lovely wife Tosca where he is currently at work on his next book.
Where The Sun Stood Still!

432 pages with photos and illustrations.

..."The untold story of Sir Jacob Vouza and the Guadalcanal Campaign. Many books have been written about World War II heroes, but few stories have been told about the national heroes in the Pacific Islands where many of the battles were fought. This life story of Jacob Vouza then is the author's tribute to him and the other courageous Solomon Islanders who served with the coastwatchers."
About The Author
Don Richter was raised in Pasadena California and like so many young men during WWII, joined the forces after highschool. He served with the first Marine Division in the Solomon Islands, fought on Okinawa, then did occupational duty in Northern China until 1946. Eventually he returned to the South Pacific as a missionary in 1953 recording lingistic work and was priviledged to work with more than 800 tribal groups over a 20 yr span. Sgt. Major Vouza and Richter became friends between 1953-55. Their mutual roots from WWII, the Semper Fi spirit of the Marine Corps and their Christian faith created a strong bond. While living in Australia in 1986, Richter learned of Vouza's death and became so determined that Vouza's life story be preserved that he set to work writing about Vouza's and other scouts' significant contributions in the dramatic struggle which led to the victory on Guadalcanal.

..."The story of a Missionary Nun who worked for 53 years in the Solomon Islands and her daring escape during World War II with the aid of the United States Armed Forces. It was a supernatural grace that allowed such a tiny person, born with fragile health and far removed from educational and cultural advantages, to become such a developed person, effective missionary, and ultimately a heroine."
About The Author
Sister Mary Evangeline was a Marist Missionary Sister whose journey spanned almost nine decades. Born in 1902 in the first decade of of the 20th century when cars, planes, and electricity were not yet commonly in use, she would live most of her life in a primitive part of the world where these entities were not known until after World War II. Constantly transferred from one mission station to another throughout her 53 years there, Sister Mary Evangeline often mused if the reason she was relocated so often was because she was considered of little use. On the contrary, her natural talents, courage, and sense of humor made her most welcome and even highly sought after. These plus her ingenuity helped her and her companions outwit the Japanese and escape to safety, despite poor health and lack of formal education. This book then is not a Biography but rather some biographical material furnished by Sister Mary Evangeline (after suffering 2 strokes) to Sister Mary Paulita; memoirs and reflections of events of the "doing" part of her life.
