TONAL VISION

Tonal Vision is a Birmingham based band of four like-minded musicians. In the summer of 1997, they met up in the same music theory class at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Jason Bailey, the mandolinist, was studying music at Maryville College in Tennessee. Simply for the fun of it, they put together a bluegrass set of music to be performed at a local pizza parlor. Since then, their performances have expanded into two main portions: One is all acoustic, consisting mostly of the bands unique and energetic original acoustic compositions but also contains some bluegrass traditionals. The other is an electrified assault of funk, rock, jazz, fusion and anything else they can get their eager hands on. They have also formulated other interesting endeavors including a juggle jam (in which two people juggle in synchronization with their music) and a rotation jam (in which each member plays upon an opposing instrument). With the anticipation of their newly-released CD, Odd Times, Tonal Vision began performing in all of Birmingham's largest music venues and have recently ventured into other markets around the state of Alabama as well as Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia.

Colin Soniat
(acoustic guitars, drums)
Colin's musical interest started with the guitar. Several guitars and amplifier's later, Colin performed in such bands as Lizzy's Angry Poem, Good Green Bus and Happy Camper. During this time, Colin began to experiment with drums and sharpened his skills on both instruments with gigs in the Birmingham area. Also, during this time, Colin's new-found interest in bluegrass prompted musical exchanges with mandolinist Jason Bailey. In 1997, the two met up with Jeremy and Kristian and the seeds of Tonal Vision were planted. An avid participant in the University of Alabama at Birmingham's MIDI ensemble, and an accomplished guitarist and drummer, Colin's myriad of influences include The Beatles, Tony Rice, Jane's Addiction, The Grateful Dead, CSNY and My Bloody Valentine, just to name a few. Colin received a BA in Music Technology during March of 2000.

Jason Bailey
(mandolin)
I can't remember when I started playing music. My parents tell me that when I was 3, I would play on our now broken organ, says Jason of his first recollections of music. Jasons first instrument was a violin. I accidentally broke it in high school and got an electric guitar to replace it. From electric to acoustic and finally to the mandolin in 1995 thanks to a $50 garage sale purchase, Jason discovered David Grisman and other mandolin greats. Music was it That year, Jason began studying music at Maryville college in Tennessee where he met several other bluegrass enthusiasts. The following summer, Jason met Colin's classmates Jeremy and Kristian and began writing and playing with them on school breaks. Jason's main influences come from that of Bob Marley, David Grisman, Tony Rice and Stephane Grappelli.

Jeremy Burns
(bass)
Jeremy received his first electric keyboard at nine because it made cool sounds. Those cool sounds fostered a love for music and, like his father, a love for the guitar and bass. Jeremy began to play in bands in high school with some success and notable gigs in the experimental Paradigm Shift. After the untimely death of his friend and fellow band mate, Barry Menk, in 1995, Jeremy's musical endeavors were limited.  Jeremy enrolled in Music Technology at UAB in 1997 where he met Colin and Kristian. One day Kristian and I were hanging out over at Colin's while he and Jason were pickin' some tunes. I wished I had my bass and, one day, I decided to bring it. The four of them have been playing together ever since. In the year 2000, Jeremy will have received his BA in Music Technology and plans to continue with the study of computer-generated music.

Kristian Cowart
(guitar)
Kristian's musical experience began at five years of age with piano and choir. Not long after acquiring his first guitar, Kristian began forming high school bands which culminated with the locally-popular band Maple Groove. It was kind of weird being in a popular bar band and not even being able to get a beer at the bar, says Kristian. At the age of 19, he began to study music on a collegiate level where he met his current bandmates. Kristian also began studying classical guitar during this time while still listening to his personal guitar heroes - Jeff Beck, Frank Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughn, John McLaughlin and David Gilmore. Kristian also credits the likes of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Phish, Grateful Dead, Steely Dan and Rush as strong musical influences. Kristian is currently working towards a BA in Music Technology at UAB.
