Older WCW figures by Toy Biz

This is a close-up of the prototype for the WCW Sting figure by Toy Biz from the "Smash and Slam" series. This photo appeared on the cover of Toy Biz magazine.

The prototype is a bit diffent from the original, as the sting logo on the chest was changed to match up with the last Wolfpac outfit that Sting wore. The Scorpions were moved to the sides, and the knee and thigh pads were colored red.

Also, the head was changed somewhat. The face was resculpted to get the likeness closer to that of Steve Borden, and the hair was changed as well. As soon as I can, I'll get some closeups of the actual figure. In the meantime, just click on the pics below to see the full-size photos.

  • The figure on the far left is another photo of the Sting figure prototype. Also courtesy of Toyfare. The changes to the final version are mentioned above. Flanking it are pictues of the actual production model.

  • The Sting / Hogan 2-pack, "Clash of Champions". The final figures are also a bit different from the prototypes, most notably Hogan who has a black-and-white NWO tank top painted on his torso. This 2-pack is the hardest of the WCW 2-packs to find. The next three pics are of the released figure.

Here are some of the new figures due to be released throughout 1999. These were all showcased at February's Toy Fair.

  • The Sting "Head Knocker". Head Knockers are electronic room decorations that talk when you move past them, and also follow you with their eyes. Pretty spiffy! It was due out this summer, but unfortunately, I hear these have been cancelled.

  • The Sting "Head-wringer". These figures, obviously, have oversized heads. They are quite similiar to sports-figure lines of the same type. Available now!

  • The Sting "Slam and Crunch" figure. These figures come with acessories that actually crunch and collapse. A very nice looking figure. Photo 1 is the prototype. Picture two is the released figure. Available now!

  • The "Tuff-Talkin" figure. These May be the nicest of the new releases. These 12-inch figures actually recognise other figures in the line and start talkin' trash. Interactive figures like this are very popular, and these should be no exception. They come in packs of two. Unless I'm sorely mistaken, DDP comes along with Sting. Available now!

  • The Sting "Road-Wild" figure. These wrestlers come with custom hogs that have working lights, sounds, and wrester phrases. Keen. Available now!

  • The "Rumble and Roar" figures feature "replica WCW Monday Nitro entrances", complete with theme music, crowd noises, and Michael Buffer's intro ( we could have skipped that last bit couldn't we? ). Available now!

  • Another Motorcycle line, "Bump and Go" mimics the marvel figure line of the same name. These bikes are will run across the floor, and change direction when they hit an object. Available now!

  • The first series of Grip 'n' Flip figure 2-packs, which feature magnetic fists, have been out for a while. Series Two was slated to include a Sting/Lex Luger set. That was altered, and the ste became Sting/Buff Bagwell instead. The prototype Sting in this set featured a nice scorpion pattern, but the production model dropped the ball, using the silver breastplate eyesore featured on the Sting "Bruisers" figure. Available now!

WCW figures by San Fransisco Toymakers

San Fransisco Toymakers no longer has the WCW Liscence, but they can still release that which was produced until the contract expired. There is still a lot of it out there.

  • This is the deluxe, 12-inch Wolfpac Sting figure, which is a KayBee Toys exclusive. These deluxe figures are the crowning gem of the SFT liscence, and are very well done. They are quite detailed, even getting the sculpting on Sting's boots correct.

  • Above is the Wolfpac Sting figure from the regular SFT WCW line. With the notable exception of the deluxe figures, most of the WCW figures produced by SFT are not well done. The toys look amatuerish, with poor sculpting, detailing, and poor paint-jobs. Although I believe this is the look SFT wanted for their WCW line, I also believe it was a mistake. Had they put the work into their regular figure lines that they put into the deluxe figures, SFT may still have the liscence today.
