Thomas began his acting career at the age of ten when he took part in childrens' theater. Gibson performed and studied with the Footlight Players at the Dock Street Theater and starred in his first play in 1973.
Six years later, Gibson attended the College of Charleston and interned at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. He was soon encouraged to apply to the famous Julliard School and ended up winning a scholarship to go there. He pursued his studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
Thomas Gibson had several Broadway appearances playing in David Hare's Map of the World or Prince Hal in Henry IV before he made his film debut in Far and Away (with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman), followed by The Age of Innocence (by Martin Scorcese). Thomas Gibson co-starred in the movie Sleep with Me (with Eric Stoltz and Meg Tilly).
He left Chicago Hope in Season 3 to take the lead in the tv-series Dharma and Greg.
He also co-stars in Stanley Kubrik's last movie Eyes Wide Shut (with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman).
