The
1998 Ford Crown Victoria Police Package was introduced in early 1998, a
few months after the 1998 retail car had been released. The car received
all new sheetmetal, but still was based on the 1992-1997 Crown Victoria.
For 1998 the Police Crown Victoria added a much improved rear suspension,
new larger 4 wheel disc brakes, new 16 inch wheels, an improved speed sensitive
steering system, and all speed traction control. The carryover 4.6 liter
SOHC V-8 was given an extra 5 hp, now rated at 215 hp. For 1999 the speed
sensitive steering was removed due to police officer complaints about the
unpredictability of the steering assist. New for 1999 was a badge of the
back of the car that read "Police Interceptor" instead of "Crown Victoria".
The car would now be refered to by Ford as "Ford Police Interceptor". The
1999 Police Package (and taxi package too) received a new black plastic
grill and black body trim. However, a street appearance package was available
to make the police package car look more like the retail car, with chrome
grill and trim, and Crown Victoria badges instead of Police Interceptor
badges. The 2000 model was basically a carryover of the 99 model. For 2001
the Police Package Ford (and Taxi package) received a new mesh style black
grill. Engine performance was slightly increased also for the Police Package
Ford. For 2006 the dashboard has been updated with a new tachometer and
speedometer, and new 17 wheels on the police package Crown Victoria.
The original design for the
1998 Crown Victoria called for a slightly different grill than what the
car received. See photos below.
