Camaro

In
response to Ford hightly successful Mustang police special service package,
Chevrolet developed a special service packe for its aging F-body Camaro
in 1991. This body style had been around since 1982 and was nearing its
time for replacement. The Mustang's body style had been around since 1979,
and the police special servic epackage, whick was loved by cops from coast
to coast, had been around since 1983. The 1991 Special Service Camara was
not the first Carmao Chevy ever built for police. Back in 1979, Chevrolet
built a few custom made Camaro Z28 for the California Highway Patrol
for testing purposes. While these 1979 Camaros were not the best quality
of cars (there were many mechanical problem with the test cars) , the CHP
loved the performance. The 1979 Camaro borrow some parts fom the Chevy
Nova and Impala police cars or that time. The tesing done by the CHP proved
the need and feasablity of such a special purpose, high speed traffic enforcement
vehicle. In a bit of irony, it would be the Ford Mustang that would get
that job a few years later with the CHP and many other police departments
in the United States. Chevy was late in the game in developing a police
Camaro. It would not be released unill 1991, just 2 years before a completely
new Camaro would come out. |
