COLD HARDY PLANTS
Growers and Breeders of Unusual Cold Hardy Plants
 

Xysmalobium undulatum 

Quantity of plants tested: 2 plants the 2001-2002 winter
Size of plant tested: one plant was 18" and the other was 12" tall.  Both started from seed in May 2001.
Soil texture: sandy loam and covered with 2" pine bark mulch.
When planted: the plants were planted in the ground in August and in September.
Winter protection: None.
Microclimate: the 18" tall plant was in a warm microclimate (5ft from a south facing wall) and the 12" plant was in a cold microclimate.
Temperature: refer to 2001-2002 winters on this chart
Findings: both plants were highly burnt after a night down to 15F.  No burn was observed after a night down to 21F.

  August 8, 2003 - both plants died and never returned after the cold from last winter.
