COLD HARDY PLANTS
Growers and Breeders of Unusual Cold Hardy Plants

Washingtonia filifera

Quantity of plants tested: 1 palm
Size of plant tested: palm was about 2ft to 2.5ft tall (ground to top of leaves)
Soil texture: loamy sand and covered with 1"-2" pine bark mulch.
When planted: the plant was planted in the ground in July 2002.
Winter protection: None.
Microclimate: cold microclimate.
Temperature: refer to 2002-2003 winters on this chart
Findings: the plant's leaves were bronzed (partially burnt) after a 17.3F night.  A 19.1F night several days prior did not harm the leaves.  The temperature probe was right on the leaf.
washingtonia_filifera_2002_nov9r.jpg (68596 bytes) November 9, 2002 - This photo shows the plant in early November after the 17.3F night.  You need to look close to see any damage.  Bottom most leaves are already highly burnt.
washingtonia_filifera_2002_nov16r.jpg (74609 bytes) November 16, 2002 - This photo shows the same palm a few days later, more browning has occurred.  It's about 50% burnt.  The lower leaves are 100% toasted.  Once again, we did not observe any damage after a 19.1F, but the 17.3F did cause damage.
