of plants tested: 20 Size of plant tested: first year seedlings Soil texture: sandy loam and covered with 2" pine bark mulch. When planted: the plants were planted in the ground in June 2001. Winter protection: None Microclimate: warm microclimate, about 1.5ft off south facing wall. The palms receive about 4hrs of sun in the winter. Temperature: refer to 2001-2002 winter on this chart Findings: all seedlings survived with no burn. No seedlings pulled any spears either. |

March 20, 2002 - This photo shows the seedlings covered in a late snow. The bulgarian seedlings are on the right side of the photo, Washingtonia filiferas are on the left side of the photo. Low temperature at this location was about 5F or so. |

April 18, 2002 - Here's the seedlings in April. The leaves are somewhat yellow, but the plants did fine with no damage. No spears pulled either which is unusual for such small plants. |

September 27, 2002 - Here's a patch of some 40+ Trachycarpus fortunei seedlings. About 30 are the "Bulgarian" strain and about 10 are the Greenville, SC strain. This is a "head to head" test of two of the better know strains. |

December 15, 2002 - here's the patch of bulgarian trachies which was shown in the September 27, 2002 photo. The leaves above the snow line are now burnt. The low above the snow line was about 2F to 5F. |
